Crash to desktop - this is a strange one

Been playing BF2 with 1.03 patch for a while now with no problems. Today, I start getting crashes to the desktop whenever I start a multiplayer game. No problems in single player.

Worked fine yesterday. The only thing I did since then was uninstall BF1942. Unfortunately, I gave the game away so I can't reinstall it.

Could the uninstall on BF1942 knock out a file that BF2 needs? Or maybe the two games share a registry setting? Seems unlikely but what else could it be?

    Specs:

    Win XP Sp2
3 Ghz P4 with gig of RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT

I've seen this before. The uninstall of 42 probably removed too much of the registry settings for EA GAMES.

It should only have removed EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942 but the uninstall of 42 probably wiped the entire EA GAMES key, which also includes Battlefield 2 settings.

You can check if you have this regsitry key:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2]

You access it with regedit.exe from run menu. I'll bet that it is missing and it contains the the location where you installed to and language version and cd-key info.

This can also mean that you can't uninstall normally because install program can't see it as installed and then it can't uininstall. If that is the case uninstall manually:

That registry key is gone. Stupid EA uninstall. Don't they think maybe someone might own the two games and want to uninstall one and not the other?

Do I need to uninstall BF2 and re-install? Or, can I just run the install again?

I suggest uninstalling and reinstalling. If you are at 1.03, it isn't a good idea to install 1.0 on top of 1.03.

Solution is to manually uninstall, look for links in post above.

It asks you during uninstall but you probably can't use regular way of uninstalling, because of the missing registry entries. That's why I link to how to uninstall manually.

Just don't delete the ..\My Documents\Battlefield 2\ folder when I explain to do so in links above.

There is no problem in deleting your profiles though, you will only have to set video and audio and keyboard settings again. Your login can be retrived online from Manage Accounts so you won't delete your ranks etc, it is stored online.

                    '

First try the Add/remove, if that works then it will ask you if you want to delete the profiles.

The EA link explains in detail how to remove the entry in Add/remove so you are able to install properly again.

It is also explained in the link to my other my just, I just don't explain it in so great detail.

It's all fixed. Had to manually uninstall, re-install of the DVD, then install the 1.03 patch. It wasn't hard but I'm still ****ed that I had to do it at all.

If you backup the Battlefield2 folder in My Documents and then restore it, you will not lose any settings.
