Im going to be building my own rig, and I wanted to know your opinions on the difference between Corsair XMS and Valueselect Memory 2 gigs go for 278.00, and 209.00. Is it much of a difference quality wise?

I went for the Corsair XMS earlier this year. Can't say that I regret it even in the least. The Valueselect stuff usually can't be overclocked as much as the top of the line XMS stuff, but it still very decent. The valueselect will work just fine as long as you don't want to overclock it very much, if at all, as it doesn't even come with heatspreaders. -

You have to get a good batch of XMS for it to be worth it though. Theres like a 33% chance that you'll get XMS RAM with TCCD chips on it. TCCDs are what make the XMS overclock high so you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting good XMS. The XMS QUALITY is EXCELLENT, but thats all there is to it, IMO. ValueSelect is pretty good quality itself, but there has only been ONE case in which ValueSelect overclocked even past 215MHz. For non-overclockers; ValueSelect.
For overclockers; OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2. That RAM exactly will overclock from 270-300MHz. Not the regular OCZ EL Platinum, but the rev.2s.Comment

I have 1GB Dual Channel XMS running in my file server downstairs which before my new rig was my gaming machine. I had 1 module of my unmatched revisions go bad on me. I sent the bad module back but Corsair offered to replace them both! Since my other module was already sent back though I asked them if they could just send another v1.1 (vs the v1.2 I sent back) and they did!
Awesome company no doubt. Great product. My oldest XMS module has been running for 2 years strong.Comment

Go for XMS, youll be better off in the long run, itll last longer and with much better latency itll easily way outperform the value select. The extra $ is worth every penny...Comment

Get the XMS. I recently upgraded from 1 gig of XMS to 2 gigs of value select to save money and had tons of problems with it while playing games. I sent it back and spent the extra $$ on 2 gigs of XMS and it's run smoothly ever since. Go for the XMS, it's worth the money!!

Get XMS. Don't skimp on RAM or PSU (power supply) when you buld a gaming system. You will most likely regret it.Comment
