If you have an original copy and it's giving you grief...then you may be a victim of copy protection. Otherwise, do you have an old optical drive?

I wholeheartedly recommend that you use drive emulation software and mount a mini-image of BF2 and bypass copy protection altogether.

I think copy protection has no place in a multiplayer game. I mean, do they require you to have your EverQuest/Star Wars Galaxies/GuildWars etc CDs in when you're playing? NO...

If you ALREADY have drive emulation software installed and are trying to use your original, sometimes you have to uninstall such programs for originals to work (e.g. Alcohol 120%, Daemon Tools).

i have original copy ($67 CAD) and a fairly new drive. Is there anything illegal or unethical about mounting an image??? Are there any aspects of the game that won't be the same because of doing this?? Finally...is there a step by step process (or a link to one) i should follow? Thanks for the help...much appreciated. A few of my buddies have this game and love it so i bought it a few days ago. I gotta get it working soon or they'll be able to kick my butt.

there is nothing illegal or unethical about running from an image of a legally obtained piece of software.
you wont miss out on anything by running from an image, its exactly the same as if you were using the dvd.
for a guide try somewhere like www.gamecopyworld.com
its a place all about making legal backups of legally obtained software.

                remember, warez are bad.

I'd try several things if you're still having problems.
                  1. uninstall/reinstall the game
                  2. update your video drivers
                  3. make sure you start with minimal resolution (800x600) and step up a little at a time as you see fit.
                  4. update your mboard bios

Well..circumventing copy protection is generally frowned upon. But I have always done it for all of my games where possible. For online games especially, it speeds up load times which is very helpful. Mostly, I hate switching out CDs and DVDs all the time. I'd rather leave them in their cases and boxes or on display on a shelf.

                    This is what I recommend:

                    Download Daemon Tools

                    Install

                    Download a BF2 mini-image

Extract the image to your hard drive

Load up Daemon Tools and right-click the icon in the tray

Select 'Virtual CD/DVD Rom', then choose a drive, and then 'Mount'.

Browse to where you extracted the mini-image.

                    Close Daemon Tools.

                    Run BF2 without the CD/DVD.

It does NOT interfere with GameSpy, PunkBuster, or ANYTHING.

                        Re: game won't launch...plz help

Happens to me sometimes. It's Windows XP being retarded and not realizing the disc is in the drive. Try this:

                        1. Reboot
                        2. To go My Computer, right-click the CD drive that the BF2 disc is in and choose Eject.
                        3. While the drive door is open, refresh the My COmputer view. It should show the drive as being empty.
                        4. Close the drive door with BF2 disc inside.
                        5. Refresh My Computer again. It should show BF2 in the drive.
                        6. Try again
                        7. (optional) Curse Bill Gates.
