    Is BF2 artillery real?

Is it real? Does the real world artillery fire so high, almost vertically? I'm just wondering.....

No, in life it is not used for that purpose.

At ranges like the ones involved in a BF2 map, it would *look* like the guns are vertical.

Remember that the scale of the maps is really small compaired to the real world.

Depends on the platform used and the range desired, but yes, it is similar

IRL mortars would be used instead of arty for the purposes portrayed in BF2.
          They generally
-fire in the high angle group
-at targets max. a few km away
-are integrated at approx battalion/company level

to the contrary, tube artillery generally
          -fires lower angles
-at target up to 30km away
-is integrated at battalion level and above

Generally mortars are the immediate support/platoon leaders "small artillery", while tube artillery can also be used against troop concentrations, enemy HQs and other high value targets, behind the FLOT.

I know one thing, the rounds that come out of the arty and then land are true rounds that follow a patch....been in BH leaving USMC base on Kubra, when the pilot flew 100' over the arty as it was firing --- goodbye BH :)

The types of tube artillery are generally distinguished by their ballistic trajectory. Cannons or guns (such as infantry support guns or those on a naval ship) are typically longer-barreled, low-trajectory weapons designed for a direct-fire role. Typically the length of a cannon barrel is greater than 25 times its caliber (inner diameter).

Howitzers are typically shorter- and thinner-barreled. Capable of both high- and low-angle fire, they are most often employed in a close indirect-fire role, operating in defilade. Typically the length of a howitzer barrel is between 15 and 25 times its caliber.

Mortars are smaller, very short-barrel, high-angle weapons capable of only high-trajectory fire at a relatively short range compared to the other types. Typically the length of a mortar barrel is less than 15 times its caliber.

Modern field artillery can also be split into two other categories: towed and self-propelled. As the name implies, towed artillery has a prime mover, usually a jeep or truck, to move the piece, crew, and ammunition around. Self-propelled howitzers are permanently mounted on a carriage or vehicle with room for the crew and ammunition and capable of moving independently in order to move quickly from one firing position to another - to both support the fluid nature of modern combat and to avoid counter-battery fire. There are also mortar carrier vehicles, many of which allow the mortar to be removed from the vehicle and be used dismounted, potentially in terrain the vehicle can't get to or in order to avoid immediate detection.

The Arty in BF2 is very, very shockingly similar to 155mm Howitzers used in the Marine Corps today. The look anyway.

You can traverse the barrel of the gun almost straight up and down like that... Artillery is mostly displaced pretty far away from the target.. If you had to shoot with the barrel that straight up and down.. you've got big problems.

Arty is a indirect fire weapon.. used to shoot over hills, buildings, whatever...over long distances. Hardly ever will you get a "fire mission" where your going to set up like they are in the game.. but It's a game... if your just looking for (realistic?) then yes.. I'd say it's pretty close.

I was an artillery man in the Marine Corps and thought I'd answer this but good job by SK, DezemoDova, and ARTY.

Just to add on. . .

The basic firing battery has 6 guns generally in line with a FDC [fire direction control center(which is what I did)] and FOs (forward observers usually attached to an infantry unit). There is a wide variety of rounds and fuses used to take out armor, infantry, bunkers, buildings, forests, etc.

There are base ejecting projectiles like the DPICM round that will drop 88 grenades a piece at a certain distance above the ground. And WP (White phosphorous) that will also explode in the air and burn everything underneath it. When those two rounds are used in combination, it is called the 'shake and bake,' and God help anyone underneath that.

Ah yes, the King of Battle. I'm sure we know some of the same people if you're an 08. Marine artillery is a really small community. Most of my friends that are still in are now Battery Ops Cheifs! Time flies by.

                          ouch, zero tolerance is right!

i remember from the movie "we were soliders" where the arty was used as a shield against enemy advancement...i always wondered how they could be so accurate (and, for that matter, if such use was true - the movies tend to be unrealistic all the time)...any real lifers out there who can verify? if they are that accurate, i find it amazingly deadly...

It all depends on how good the observer is. The last automated system I used was called AFATDS and the IFSAS before that at the Battalion level and they still used the BCS in the battery level. You should know that everything is measured and taken into account before a round is sent down range. I mean things like, weather, size & weight of the round / fuse, powder, distance, elevation, curve of the earth, etc. Tables, slide rulers, charts & darts, are still used to verify the computer calculations.

Sometimes there are mishaps because there are millions of minute things that can go wrong, but the rounds will land exactly where the FO calls them.
