    Chopper guide please help

    Hi all,

I fly with mouse and keyboard and I m ok for the moment (I mean I can go wherever I want without exploding against tree or wall :) but I don t know how to aim for moving vehiclesand the worst, I almost never touch another chopper.

Can someone point me out a good guide on how to train for this? I love flying choppers in this game but I never get a lot of kills

    Many thanks,

    John.

    Re: Chopper guide please help

I think I read a tutorial somewhere, but I don't remember where. Maybe someone else will post a link. While a tutorial may help a bit, the thing that will help you learn the most will be practice. The most you'll probably get from a tutorial is tweaking settings to make flying easier. Other than that, just experiment.

I'd recommend playing singleplayer, start your own server or join an empty server and just mess around. Try some stunt flying, get a feel for the chopper. Try shooting at ground targets from various angles and speeds. Try "orbiting" a target and trying to hit it with your rockets. Once you get all that down, try to think like you've got a gunner flying with you. Learn how to orbit and hover to allow your gunner the best possible shot without endangering you or your gunner.

All that just to say again: Practice, practice, practice.

Practice on single player. And my personal way of flying is with the keyboard. I almost never crash. When flying, remember to try and keep the horizontal lines parallel with the horizon. to turn for beginners, level out vertically, use the "a" and "d" keys to turn to your desired direction, and then nose downwards. Also for beginners, try and stick to shooting vehicles that arent moving, or that are moving in the same direction as you. ALSO,IF YOURE A BEGINNER AND YOU HAVE A CO-PILOT,PLZ WARN HIM YOURE A BEGINNER TO PREVENT HIM FROM BITCHING AT YOU

        Re: Chopper guide please help

No guides can help, only practice.

Go to an empty server (or try singleplayer mode), and try flying.

Try to have a goal, like: "I'll try to approach helipad, then rotate myself for 180 degrees (so that you look back at direction you came from - can be VERY useful in battles :)) while approaching and end up hovering above helipad". Also, try to learn how to get into hovering mode easily. Learn to rotate quickly. Learn to lose or gain altitude as fast as possible.

Shoot at things when you're hovering. Then shoot at them while you're moving. You'll get used to "when" you need to release missiles in different situations.

Later on, get onto trying to "rotate" (not sure this is the right word though :)) around one point on the ground (or around building).

But PLEASE don't try to learn how to fly through warehouses, or through Kubra Dam pipe, or below Dalian Plant pipes, etc. All these "stunts" are completely useless in the battle. All the worst pilots I flew with were doing such "stunts".

You also have to realize that fast flying is a no-no. If you have a gunner, he'll be able to do nothing if you go fast. It's much better to master hovering and how to move from hovering, quickly.

Don't bother trying to fly low - it'll be useless (especially to your gunner).

I find it extremely hard to aim when you use the keyboard... maybe my sensitivity is too high? Even if that can be adjusted for the keyboard...

            Re: Chopper guide please help

one technique to avoid getting hit by a missle while hovering would be to (if you fly with keyboard like i do ) hold down the down arrow, putting your nose up and propelling yourself backwards. IT WORKS! especially when those jet flying bastard are flying slow as hell trying to take you out.

Oh. Guided missles are easy; I can dodge them most of the time, or just drop flares. Choppers reload flares so fast, you can have flares in the air almost 80% of the time.

My biggest fear is actually a MEC/Chinese buggy with an FAV gun. It's a silent killer.... bastards sit somewhere in a tree and shoot at you, and all you can do is watch your helo's HP (rather quickly, actually) approach zero.

I ll give it a try then.

                Cheers,

                  Re: Chopper guide please help

                  Like mentioned before, the best way to learn how to fly a chopper is with practice. When I was learning I just created a server and passworded it. The only advice I can give is the same advice people will give you when you're learning to drive a car;

Don't concentrate on what you don't want to hit. Look where you want to go and you'll do a lot better.

Heh, never thought of this. Thanks for the info, I'll keep it in my when a pesky slick is getting on me nerves.

Practice - and take a look at the bottom of this page - there are links to all of the other threads associated with this topic.

                      Re: Chopper guide please help

i fly with the keyboard, never the mouse. I have a joy stick but I dont use that either. I might give it a try someday for flying jets, but never ever ever choppers. Why? Because with the mouse you have to...meh lol its just annoying to control it, same with a joystick flying choppers. I've flown choppers with the keyboard since the days of operation flashpoint, and never changed. Usually I out fly other people in a chopper, and always give my gunner perfect tv missile shots...whether they hit or not depends how good they are lol :p....but yea...practice...i've been doing it for years in many different games, so its nothing new to me. When I got this game, the only thing i needed to learn was how sensitive the controls were, since every game is different, but it wasn't long till i was doing barrel rolls and....many other things you shouldnt do with a chopper lol...so just keep practicing, go in single player or creat your own multiplayer lan game so no one is there and just fly around like an idiot, try doing landings in "hot zones", making tight turns, etc.

I still don't understand how you can aim dumb missles in a chopper with keyboard... I can never get it to go exactly in the direction I want to. But yeah, doing tricks (barrel rolls for example) is much much easier with keyboard. That, or you set your mouse sensitivity to max.

The single best bit of advice I can give on how to fly choppers is to imagine that you are being held up by a collum of air (that's what it really is all about). If you tilt in any direction, you start to slide off that collum. The more you tilt, the more you slide, but since you are falling off that collum, you will also start to fall.

After seeing a lot of people in choppers, I've come to the conclusion that you either have it or you don't. I'm not saying that people can't become functional pilots... just that most will never develop the skills necessary to outfly the naturals out there, or don't have the awareness required to make quick and proper decisions in the air. For what it's worth, I use keyboard and mouse...
