    Commander Points?

Does anyone have a clue what it takes to get commander points these days? I can't seem to find any information on it. Prior to the 1.03 patch, the commander points were a little more clear cut. You would get 1 point for an artillery kill as well as points for dropping supplies to heal/repair your infantry/vehicles. Now that the 1.03 patch is out, I can't figure out how you actually gain commander points. It almost seems random.

I know they've eliminated the teamkills from artillery strikes, and artillery kills no longer show up as kills, but are they only worth fractions of a point now? For example, I dropped an artillery strike that killed four or five guys, but I didn't increase my score at all. Why is that? It sure seems like commander points are fractional because I've ended up with odd scores after the 2x bonus.

Are commander points are given out based on time, or number of control points that your team controls or something? Any information would be helpful.
    Thanks

It's exactly the same as before the patch: the average team score = commander score. You received no points for artillery, supplies, or for spotting enemies before the patch, and you still don't.

      CamelToad....

There's a small chance that you may get flamed for asking a question that comes up almost everyday :)

As Duffman said, the patch didn't change anything. It's still the average as stated in the user manual.

Your best bet is too NOT just spam supply crates and UAV's.

Tell your squads what to do and spam there leaders telling them when UAV or supplies are available or even artillery if you want to.

Everytime they request and you give it too them u get points and not only that it means that supplies and UAV's go exactly where they are needed and so greatly increase your teams effectiveness too cap flags which also give you points.

Its depends on the team largly but playing the other night i got 60 odd points 2 matches running as commander and got a silver medal followed by a gold one :)

            Wrong....

*sigh*... This is the third time in two days I copy/pasted this from my guide, despite people being linked to the guide or threads with this information. *Stares at Big_Sammy_B *

            Commander Points and Commander Bonus

            How Commander Points work

The formula for commander points is:

Total score earned by the team / # of players = Commander score.

Back in the days when BF2 players were still trying to figure out the forumula, many believed it was the average score per player in the team, even the crappy BF2 manual stated this theory. However, many pointed out several flaws in this theory, either by testing it or giving a counter scenario such as: "Why won't commander's score drop if the average score of each player decreases?"

The word that was missing in the theory that the commander score is based on the average score per player was EARN. This word drastically changes how the commander earns its points and explains various causes that lead to commanders getting points.

            Again, I shall remind you:
Commander score formula: Total points earned by team / # of players in the team.

You see, when the average points earned by player goes up, the commander's score also increases. What's so unique about this formula compared to others is that commanders are immune to point reduction if their team's average score decreases due to TKs or other similar acts. Also, it safegaurds commanders from losing points or being delayed from earning their points if one or few of their teammates, especially players that gained high # of points, leaves the server hence dropping the average points per player.

This formula also explains why commanders get points if a player kills a spotted enemy either by commander's spot command or UAV and why commanders earn points if their teammates captures the flag.

In addition, it encourages the commander to keep supporting their team to earn more points via UAV, Spots, and Supplies. Furthermore, since commanders do not get any points from artillery, they steal kill points (1 Kill = 2 points) from thier teammates and thus commanders must carefully decide whether to use artillery against its foes that could be dealt with by friendlies. After all, friendlies get points for killing, but you do not (CMDR achieving 1 Kill/Assist/Capture = 0 points).

Do you see the irony? Killing enemies or capturing flags alone as commander will make you steal points from your teammates and therefore, by the formula, you will also be robbed of potential commander points.

Example of the formula in the works: In the first half of the match, your team consists of 20 players who earn a total of 400 points. However, due to Teamkills and other related incidents, your team has an overall total score of 325. In the 2nd half, 10 players from your team disconnects the server and thus you have a total of 10 players in your team. They earn a total of 300 points but due to TKs and other related incidents, your team has an overall total score of 250.

So with the given information, what's the total possible score a commander would get before the 2x bonus? Lets see:

            1st half: 400 points earned / 20 players = 20 points per players
            = 20+ for commander

            2nd half: 300 points earned / 10 players = 30 points earned per player
            = 30+ for commander

The total score a commander could have before 2x bonus is 50.

            Commander Bonus

As you know, only Commanders get 2x bonus if his team wins. However, it's not actually a 2x bonus but it's good enough to describe it generally. In truth, the game doesn't actually double your score, but actually adds the commander points you earned to your total score. The significant effect of this rule is

-Even if somehow, such as teamkill, you lose points, the bonus will still account for that point

-No one can double their points simply by becoming the commander just before the round ends.

So let's say you had the total of 50 commander points and overall of 50 points. You score 2 teamkills, giving -8 to your overall score to 42. The round ends with your team winning the round. Instead of 42 x 2 = 84, you actually get 92 points. Why? Because the game actually adds your overall score to the commander points you earned, so it's actually 42 + 50 = 92.

Conclusion, the formula is: Total Score + Commander Points Earned, not Total Score x 2.

Finally, players who rack up a lot of points by kills, teamwork points, and flag captures and quickly be commander before the round ends do not double his score because he had no commander points to be added to his total score at all.

So in what way is that wrong? I never said you didn't get a score based on the average of your team. But you do get points for issuing orders and the squad leaders accepting them or squad leaders requesting things and you giving them too them.

You do get points for that i have done it myself.

Maybe but you're still wrong. I just played as commander and the first thing I did was issue the squads with orders. 3 accepted and 1 managed to cap the flag but I still had zero commander points.

Nope, commander can never directly get commander points based on their action alone, that includes accepting requests or giving orders to squads.

Here's a counter scenario: Order your squad during the beginning of the match and tell me if you get commander points for it.

I apologize for reposting this topic, but the search tool on these forums just sucks. I tried searching on "commander points" in both the basic and advanced searches before posting and came up with nothing regarding this topic. Even now if I search on this it can't even find this thread, but somehow it shows a list of similar threads at the bottom of this page.

I actually find this scoring system ridiculous. It actually encourages people to be bad commanders. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see a commander running around the battlefield engaged in combat. How can they be commanding if they're engaged in combat? Now that I know the scoring system, it makes complete sense. Using artillery actually hurts a commander's score, since no one gets points for the kills, but the opposing team loses tickets. I can't believe that command points are in no way related to how effective a commander is. I certainly hope EA would consider changing this in the future.

Can commanders actually get combat points for killing enemies or capturing flags themselves, or does being commander limit them to only receiving command points?

I agree with the search not always working so great...which I find to be very amusing - especially when at the bottom of the thread the "Similar Threads" section seems to find them without a problem at all.

Not saying you are wrong - I am agreeing with you. The searches suck - but how is it that Similar Threads are dead on?

While commanders don't get direct points from UAV / supplies.... the use of them in the right way should help his team play to their best and hopefully beat the other team. I don't believe that the scoring system encourages people to engage in combat because if they do and end the game as commander, then they get zero points. Using arty doesn't hurt the commanders score and costs the other team tickets.

I agree that the UAV is invaluable, since it helps your troops locate and kill the enemy, and the supply drop resupplies and repairs your assets, but the artillery kills rob the commander and team of potential points. That just doesn't make any sense. Granted, artillery can certainly help your team win, but it doesn't help your score.

                            What do you mean by

As far as I know, as long as the commander doesn't resign, he still gets the commander points. The thing that I have a problem with is when the commander is actively running around killing people rather than tending to his duties as commander.

Arty doesn't help your commander score no, but at least the kills are added to the BFHQ (for those who care) :) If arty is used to take out the other team players who are defending a flag right before you order your team into take it over then it's a positive thing. I never thought of it in the way you do (i.e. as something that robs the commander of potential points)

True, that indeed sucks, but at least anything the player does while in combat isn't counted in his commander points. The debate about mobile commanders rages on here weekly :)
