Those of you out there that think you can write a game like this that has all the features everyone has clammored about, well here's your chance. Below are links to some open source FPS games. Get to work. I'll be a BETA tester. I look forward to seeing the code you write for the helicopter and jet bots. I'm sure I'll be impressed.

Re: To The Expert Software Engineers
You have taken account for the fact that people payed $40-$50 for BF2? To me, the fact that people payed to get the game is their only justification to complain about it.Comment

Re: To The Expert Software Engineers
sure, some people may find a reason to contribute to an open-source project like this, but there's something you need to remember. the developers who coded Battlefield 2 were paid in cash, not in respect, recognition, or whatever "payment" open-source developers receive. the more serious software developers who post here (who do it as a career) will tell you that they probably have little interest to code in their "free time" when they stare at IDE's all day long at their workplace.
i can tell you for a fact that i don't feel like opening Eclipse or VS when i'm at home after a long day of WSAD. ungh.
i do feel somewhat "ripped off" considering the state of BF2. if my team (of software developers) released an enterprise solution for a fortune 500 company with such obvious bugs, we would not get to move on to the next project until those bugs had been ironed out. then again, we attempted to code against written test cases BEFORE actually writing any real code, so the only "bugs" we experienced were discovered to be bad test data by the testing team. *shrugs*Originally posted by Bird KillerYou have taken account for the fact that people payed $40-$50 for BF2? Re: To The Expert Software Engineers
This is true. And what would anyone modding (since the game engine already exists, apparently, for these opensource FPS engines) this engine get...approval from someone on the forum? I don't see any use of this thread as it's point isn't well supported.Originally posted by The Soup Nazisure, some people may find a reason to contribute to an open-source project like this, but there's something you need to remember. the developers who coded Battlefield 2 were paid in cash, not in respect, recognition, or whatever "payment" open-source developers receive.Comment

Re: To The Expert Software Engineers
BF 2 just needed more gameplay analysis, balance testing and technological QA testing.
I think that someone somewhere decided that it was okay to cut corners on some of those activities since DICE has a few, mostly similar BF games under its belt.
Oops.Comment

Re: To The Expert Software Engineers
true that. unfortunately, DICE was probably put under a lot of pressure when it came to EA releasing Battlefield 2. if this game had been done by id Software (or Blizzard, for that matter) and with publisher other than EA, i have little doubt that the game would have had fewer bugs than it has now. both id Software and Blizzard develop with the mantra "When it's done." not only that, but they seem to actively release bugfixes in the form of patches a whole lot more often, as well. why should EA care about releasing patches for a game that they already received payment for?Originally posted by ||ass||variableBF 2 just needed more gameplay analysis, balance testing and technological QA testing.

if there was anyone who was interested in developing a mod or creating an unnoficial "patch" for Battlefield 2, it would most likely be college students who are looking for development experience. heck, EA could even form a partnership with a couple universities. if i was still in college and my school offered me the opportunity to create a mod or patch for a large game like Battlefield 2 as a capstone project (or even an off-site internship of sorts), i would have definitely taken it (assuming i was in game design). companies today are looking for "Real World" experience in their prospective employees, not necessarily a shiny portfolio piece.Comment
