  • BF2 Locks up computer

    First the Machine

    AMD 3500+
    2GB Ram DDR
    250 SATA
    7800 GTOC Nvidia BFGtech

This just started last night...or by the time most of you read this 2 nights ago...AMD doesn't know...EA doesn't know...Nvidia doesn't know...HP doesn't know...in short everyone that should know doesn't. Now on to the problem

While playing BF2 in Multiplayer mode the game will freeze up after about 3-5mins of playing. I can't ALT-F4 nor can I alt-Tab, or CTRL-ALT-DEL, my whole system locks up forcing me to manually shut down and reboot. Upon rebooting my screen looks like this...
    http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...9/Image012.jpg
Except all the colors are correct, the photo distorted them. I have to restart though the start menu to have the screen return to normal.

Thinking it was the video card overheating I ghetto up an extra fan to keep it cool and rejoined BF2...after 4 mins of playing in multiplayer I was holding at 55c and it happened again. I had to do the above process again(unplug-replug...get wierd screen and restart) to get back to nomal.

Rulling out the Video card I believed it was something with my computer...Virus of the sort...I ran a complete Nortan and Spy sweeper and nothing showed up...

So I reformated the entire PC. Reinstalled all my drivers, including the motherboard, and installed BF2 and the updated patch...ran again and Boom another one bits the dust.

Further believing it has to do with BF2 I ran BF:FH for 2 hours today with not so much as a hick-up, I know it wasn't my internet cause I am on a reliable connection. I can run everyprogram in the book but BF2 without a flaw...now granteed nothing taxis a system like BF2.

What bothers me most is this happened out of the blue...nothing was downloaded that week onto my computer...not a nortan update not spysweeper, not so much as a porn video. Then without changing anything in game this problem shows up.

I might have found atleast the most likly suspect...AMD. I read in a abscure post that when a true 64bit AMD processor is running at 100% and the power supply is messed with, increases or decreases it what i think they ment, it will cause the Processor to crash hence the computer. But I currently have my computer hooked up to an Uninterruptible power supply UPS. So that would mean the CPU power supply the cord goes into...but I need confrimation that this has happened to other people and what other people have come up with.

O and BTW this problem doesn't present itself while playing Singleplayer BF2... I know some people were saying PB but woun't that update by itself? And if not will not updating it cause this?

            Re: BF2 Locks up computer

exactly the same thing happens to me, and only when I play BF2. I run a GF6800GT 256MB and athlon 3200 64 with a Hiper 480watt PSU and UPS.

I originally thought it was the graphics card overheating so I swapped it, but it still happens (but not all the time). I also turned off overclocking of the graphics card and CPU and reinstlled different drivers.

when I reboot I still get the crash and graphical glitch, but I find if I turn the pc off from the mains (not by the power button), leave it for 10 mins then switch back on, everything is fine.

I strongly suspect the problem is caused by BF2 causing the CPU to overheat

              Re: BF2 Locks up computer

              Thanks H9DLB...

Did it just happen out of the Blue? And I see you are running an AMD also so I think that has something to do with it since my Video Card doesn't run over 55c ever...

Did you also check the Photo to see if that ever happened to you?

Anyone else with any Ideas on how to fix it?

                Re: BF2 Locks up computer

yes it does happen out of the blue, but when it does happen, it happens repeatedly until I let the system cool down

yes i did check the photo, similar thing happens to me - mad graphical glitch & system locked up.

                definately not the graphics card.

might be overheating ram - I run 1.5gb of DDR400

                    Re: BF2 Locks up computer

This is the reason I think its an AMD thing or an PB thing...maybe both?

That is one trippy picture on your monitor. Look im not into amd, im intel. But it sounds like hardware heating issue. I know you put a big fan to blow air in, Have you checked all the heatsinks and make sure all is nice and tight and fan's workin at correct speed?

Hopefully that'll be the last we see of it.

I'll see if I can get my friend on tonight and see if the problem is gone on his end as well.
