Fast specs, BF2 choppy at times - please help

Before I begin, let me say I searched with limited results. This thread: http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showt...ghlight=choppy explains the same problem I`m having, but it ends with no explanation on how to fix the problem or if it was ever solved.

I am NOT a computer novice, so let's skip any sort of "spyware / antivirus" discussions or something simliar and get straight to the point.

I was running a 2.4Ghz P4 (533mhzFSB) with DDR 1x512MB (333mhz) and 2x215MB(400mhz) system. The game would run fine in some maps but not others, the main culprits were these maps:

Daqing Oilfields - I belive thats the name of the map, I`m a BF2 newb still, its the one with the oil cisterns located in the middle of the map (USMC vs. Chinese). The frame rate would drop to un-playable and would chop extremely badly in this region of the map for some reason

Kubra Dam - A little choppy all around, alot more playable than the above map, but still not really at the level I'd like it at.

Strike at Karkand - Choppy in most "concentrated" area's. Fine at USMC original spawn point, really bad at the south-most MEC spawn points, and at the MEC's north-east factory spawn points, where all the building and factories are.

So I figured it was time to upgrade my system. First I thought its my video card, so I bit the bullet and upgraded my system:

    P4 3.2E Ghz (800mhzFSB)
    MSI Neo-P 2 845PE Chipset
    2x1GB (400mhz) Ram (i took out the 333mhz)
    ATI XT850

After all this, I was pretty suprised to see the problem still there without much improvement. It feels as if it's "caching" something while doing this, it doesn't look like a video limitation.

I`m a little stumped, does anyone have even as much as a suggestion? I`m leaning towards more advanced issues such as bus speed perhaps, IDE transfer, or perhaps something else..

Its also important to note that I re-installed HalfLife2 just to see how bad it would be, and I laughed for a good minute after absolutely maxing out all details and highest res and I have never seen a game run so fast and smooth on a system before. It looks like the problem is somewhat isolated to BF2.

I got 3 things for you to try.
First go into your BIOS and set PCI latency to 64, if not in the BIOS dnload this tool http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951 .
Next in the BIOS set APG apature to the size of the RAM on your VID card (either 128 or 256).
Last but not least if your mouse resolution is to high it will seen jerky when moving side to side. In windows go to mouse properties turn up acceleration & speed for the mouse as high as it will go then go INGAME and adjust mouse sensativity down to your preferance. This will cause the crosshair to be moved in smaller incraments ONSCREEN thus smoothing it out.

You may also want to check your power supply.

Re: Fast specs, BF2 choppy at times - please help

Couldn't it also be the fact that you take a rather old mother board, that supports older CPUs and RAM speeds?? None of the 845 variants support 800MHz FSB, and most of them support only 266/333MHz RAM.

Take a look at the 845PE chipset here:
            http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/845pe/index.htm

It runs only 400/533 MHz FSB, 266/333MHz on RAM and AGP is only 4x. So you might have gotten a new CPU and RAM but you are running it in a old mother board, that is slowing it down, as FSB and RAM can't run at its full potential and the mother board doesn't support dual channel, that is most likely your problem.

exactly. I was going to say it is your board or the ram you have. Also when you mix and match your RAM like that it runs at the lowest speed you have installed. And can cause problems with functionality.

Thank you the problem has been solved. I've been also doing alot of searching on EA forums and found the same answer. After this running this little utility, it turned out my ATI Card was running at 256 latency, and my "Secondary" ATI Display adapter (same card) was running at 64 for some strange reason. I've changed the primary down to 64 and it's SOO much better, thanks for the help, it feels better knowing all this money I spent didn't go to waste.

Also, I've posted the wrong motherboard, i've got the Neo-2 with the 865PE chipset with 800mhz FSB and AGP X8, my mistake.

Glad you worked it out :)

About PCI Latency if you used the tweaked drivers like Omegadrivers, they don't set value to 256, as regular ATI Catalyst do.
So if using OD drivers it relies on the setting in your BIOS, or if you set it manually like now of course.
