I've only played commander a few times but the times I have played it I usually hide somewhere really good and stick to my commander interface. Many times I've seen commanders out in the open fighting but I can't even realize how they are doing this. There are so many things you must do as a good commander that these people obviously aren't doing. When I command I typically use the scan every time it's up and tell my guys what base is the least secure so our team can go secure it. Not to mention having to listen for supply drops, send out attack/defend commands to squads, etc. That guy in the SS obviously didn't know how to command properly.

Commanders who go around fighting the enemy are just stupid. It's not like they get points or anything for the kills.

If you have chosen to command then command. If not let someone more competent do it. There is a lot more to commanding than arty strikes and UAV deployment. Things like directing squads, spoting and announcing enemy movements, dropping supplies ready for an attacking squad. In fact to command properly you should never leave the commander screen.
