key setups for flying the jets...

Just wondering how exactly people fly those jets and what keyboard layout they use? all keyboard or do you use the mouse as well? because when I try to set up a control that's feels comfortable the game tells me those keys are already assigned in the common controls.

I've been seeing these stunt flying videos lately and is that type of control possible with just the keyboard?

Keyboard + mouse, sensivity at 5, yaw/pitch ratio at max. Get used to it and you will fly better than anyone who dumped $100 at a joystick but still cant fly.

i use a joystick

i make the sensitivity of all the yaw and pitch factor at full, and the senisitvity at full as well, for jets.

helicopters are differnt though, the more sensitive you make it, the less stabability you will have(like if your hovering ontop of a flag), but you will have more control(like if you see a moutain you will be able to avoid it easier). trade off, just like everything else in life.

I can't speak to Battlefield 2, but there were many debates back around the time of Battlefield 1942 about joystick versus keyboard. I was a joystick user. I downed many, many keyboarders that thought they were great pilots. Not all however. There was one that was incredible. Out of many dogfights he came out with a slight lead (12 to 10 if my memory servers me). I didn't play everybody of course. There may have been many more pilots out there better than me (that used either joystick or keyboard) but I did meet several keyboarders online that thought they couldn't be beat and took them out with my joystick in dogfights.

As to whether or not keyboard is better in BF2, I don't know. I don't fly much yet. The jets seem too fast for such small maps. The elegance is gone to me. It's a different style of flying. Maybe the keyboarders have the upper hand now. I don't know. I've always used a stick in the past though and would be hard pressed to learn how to switch and be effective.

You bet! I've got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and love it. Great stick and cheap too! I paid around $25 for it 2 years ago. It's still going strong!

There's another I've heard good things about but I haven't had the chance to try yet. It's called the Cyborg Evolvo (I think that's the name)...

except that the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro dies after 3 or 4 months. look it up on google and add "calibration problems" to the search query and you'd be amazed!

Dont waste yer money on a joystick

W - Thrust
S - Brake
A - Left rudder
D - Right rudder

Mouse set to 4/5 sensitivity and make sure you have a decent mouse. I fly against friends who have joysticks and beat them 80% of the time :)

I use my old faithful joystick (in sig). Mice and keyboard may be OK for some people, but for me it doesn't feel right flying a plane with a mouse.

i prefer keyboard + mouse. i have better control than with a joystick. it is easy to get the hang of.

I bet on this too.
My problem for jets in BF2 is the control of trrust.... don't get fixed at some percent, when the key (w) is left up. Neither have 1,2,...,0 to hold thrust at 10,20,... 100% like in so many flight sims.
In this game i only fly copters (keys+mouse).

Yes, there have been some calibration problems but those are the minority and generally due to the user not knowing what they are doing. I have personally helped 8 different users on Logitech forums with calibration problems. Each time it was something the end user was doing and they were NOT following the simple directions.

I have one that is still going strong after two years. I have two friends that have them (one has been in use for 1 1/2 years) and one that has been in use for about 8 months. No problems calibrating or anything else. I did have another friend who had one that started having the trigger not work randomly after about a year. He replaced it with another Extreme 3D Pro that he bought used and it has been working for about 6 months so far without any problems. If I was going to buy a stick I'd definitely get this one again.
