Hi,
I see a lot of people on the forums posting that they have gotten a badge or medal in game and are wondering why sites like Medal Progress Indicator or BF2S take a while to show the new awards or scores.
The reason for this is two fold :-
1. These sites draw stats from the Gamespy Stats Servers. (These can sometimes take up to 24hours to register new awards and stats)
2. These sites cache the stats to a database so as not to overload the Gamespy Stats Servers (ie. Make problem 1 worse)
So speaking from experience in the creation of the Medal Progress Indicator, if I was to retrieve your stats in real time every time you wanted to see where you were at, I would have to hit the stats severs every time you hit my site. This would probably result in an IP ban for my site, but more importantly it would effect the ability of those servers to deliver their info to the game itself. (Their most important job!)
How I resolved this was to do a real time update the first time anyone visits my site, then place you in a holding pattern for a minimum of three days. During this time your stats are serverd up from a the database on the web site. After those three days, if you do a lookup it goes back out to the live server and updates your stats.
BF2s has a similar strategy in place to ensure it does not place too much load on the Gamespy Stats Servers.
I hope this explains why we are all forced to wait for our stats to update. Sometimes understanding why things are built that way can reduce the frustration.
Medal Progress Indicator is at www.ultimategroover.com
BF2S is at www.bf2s.com
