Originally, it was owned. However, P is right next to O, so often, it would come out as pwn.

It ended up catching on to the l337 h4x0r community and is now regarded as a seperate l337 w0rd.

i agree with all that. when i see that stupid language i automatically think tiny p*nis teenager that gets picked on at school. Or an extremely immature adult that gets picked on at work, and takes orders from his wife, and has to try to be special in his own little world.

I think it's humorous that some poor clueless fools still use this. It was originally used by the hacking/phreaking community. As soon as it became mainstream several years ago they got as far away from it as possible. Most of the people using it now are just clueless as can be but like to think they're "with it" because they use it.

It's the equivalent of wearing a leisure suit. Those went out of style a long time ago too.

I will use low level things like lol (rofl, ect...) pwned, and w00t...however the actual 1337 writing I hate. For instance when a sentance consists of more numbers then letters, well...

You're confusing things that came from different places Shadow_Wolf. LOL, ROFL and such aren't part of 1337.

As for a lot of people using it for being out of style, that's exactly the death-knell for just about all styles. It's started by a sub group in order to define themselves from the mainstream. Once the mainstream adopts it, they run like hell from it. Then it's looked upon as old school and then fades into obscurity.

We're at the point where the clueless mainstream still thinks it's cutting edge, but the reality is that it's only the clueless mainstream that's using it now (and that's why it's amusing).

If anyone here has played WoW, you will be familiar with quite a few phrases like pwnd.
I've seen ownd, ownt, smashT, wtf(ownd, pwnd or smashT), pwnt, pwnd, and some others similar.
Newbie: n00b, nwbe, nube, nub, nublet, nubzor, etc.
lol: ROFL, LOL, LMAO, ROFLMAO.
Then other nice abbreviations and phrases: GTFO, WTF, GFUS, "pwnd with ez", "carebear", and too many others.
1337 speech: 4|| `/0|_||2 |34$3 3|23 |33|_0/\/6 +0 |_|$

It was a slightly painful experience to see so many messages like this...
