    Dogfighting Tips

Here are a couple of dogfighting tips that I learned while in the air:
    1. Don't fly straight: This may sound obvious, but whenever you hear the lock buzzer turn hard. Many bomber pilots ignore the buzzer and are an eazy kill.
    2. Use a joystick: A mouse and keyboard its going to cut it.
    3. Check your 6: Personally I recommand mapping the F9 and F11 keys to the HAT on your joystick so you can quickly check your 6.
    4. When dogfighting, don't fly over enemy AA: Take the fight away from the bases because you don't want to have an enemy AA vehicle or enemy Stinger/IGLA take you down while dogfighting.
    5. Be a medic: You still get points for destroying enemy assets, but most importantly is that you'll be able to travel outside the boundaries of the map for short periods of time (this will allow you to escape from some pilots).
    6. Have your co-pilot spot for you: Having a co-pilot spot for you can really help. Having VOIP and communitating during a dogfight is also great if you have the luxury. The co-pilot can spot using F11 view or just mouselook and communicate with you.
    7. Altitude is your friend: By doing loops into the higher (less than 800m), altitude you can often loose your opponents.
    8. Keep your bomb view as long as possible: When you have your bombs selected you don't trigger the buzzer alarm in the enemy jet. This allows you to get into position before you switch and release your missiles.
    9. Shoot two missiles each time: There's not need to shoot all 6 missiles. Most likely the enemy pilot will pull up or turn sharply so all your other missiles will just miss. Be patient and use your guns in bomb view until you think you can use your missiles - try to shoot your missiles ahead of the target so the missiles don't have to turn as much.
    10. Flying low if you're a good pilot: I don't recommend this, but if you're playing against a novice pilot you may want to fly low and make tight turns around hills and structures - novice pilots will crash. This is not recommended against experienced pilots since obstacles will not really hamper them.
    11. Team up with someone in ground AA: Sometimes you'll see a guy that just LOVES ground AA, get him in your squad and communicate with him. Lure the enemy jet pilots towards the ground AA and work together in taking the enemy jet down. Becareful to always stay within the 350m range of the ground AA, if the ground AA shoot while locked on the enemy and looses lock in-flight the missile may hit you instead (still buggy in 1.03).
    12. EDIT: Fly outside the map bounds: Make sure you're a medic and you can fly outside the bounds. Do this two or three times during a dogfight and you'll kill the enemy pilot if he's not a medic. If you're in a bomber and both you and your co-pilot are medics you can last longer.
    13. EDIT: Be Anti-tank and steal enemy jet: When trying to steal enemy jets I recommend going Anti-tank since you can hit a jet while its taking off. If you have time to setup you can place C4 on the runway or if you can run and jump to get a C4 on the actual jet you can blow it anytime. Whatever kit you choose make sure to time the respawn of the jet otherwise when they respawn they'll kill you as you're taking off.
    14. EDIT: Shooting Air-to-Air Missiles without a lock: Yep that's right you can shoot Air-to-Air Missile with no lock if you're at point blank range. You can do this by sneaking up behind the enemy when its over its runway or when its doing a bombing run (many bomber pilots will level out their flight to give their co-pilot's a clear shot). More experienced pilots will be checking their 6 (see above), whenever they are doing any straght-a-ways (where they are most vulnerable to missiles), so this trick won't work on them. Becareful though to dodge the enemy jet's wreckage or you'll be dogfood. I'm still experimenting with shooting Air-to-Air Missiles at range since they arc up at a gentle angle, but haven't perfected the technique. Personally I like shooting the missiles slightly before the lock is locked - that seems to give the best results.
    15. EDIT: Don't fly over artillery strikes or artillery: If you're directly above an artillery piece when it fires it will kill you (there are actually projectiles that leave the artillery piece). Also flying above an artillery strike, friendly or enemy, can kill you as well.
    16. EDIT: You don't need to go back to the airfield all the time: The best pilots, the ones that have 30:1 ratio, don't go back to the airfield to restock on ammo all the time...they use their guns. Soft targets like jeeps and anyone in AA or ground defense turrets are easy to kill - if you can't line-up quickly on a box in your reticle then you need to increase the sensitivity.
    17. EDIT: Mouselook: You can edit your CONTROLS.CON file to allow you to mouselook with your joystick, but still have to press CTRL or you can run a third party program like JoyToKey that'll allow you to use your HAT to mouselook without having to press CTRL to enter Mouselook mode.
    18. EDIT: Check ground AA emplacements: Whenever you get a lock that isn't a jet you'll want to check the ground AA emplacements. I recommend circling at a 90 degree angle and checking the ground AA emplacements or just circle around and use your guns to blow them away. Some people have figured out that its smart to stay inside an AA emplacement and so they get out when they don't think they can shoot you...this is where you spray the area with your guns.
    19. EDIT: Don't fly over artillery strikes or artillery: If you're directly above an artillery piece when it fires it will kill you (there are actually projectiles that leave the artillery piece). Also flying above an artillery strike, friendly or enemy, can kill you as well.

Those are some basic tips I've learned while flying in the field. I'm sure I missed some or some of the above needs correcting so feel free to do so.

See you on the battlefield, soldier!!!

EDIT: Added 2 more tips at the bottom.

      Re: Dogfighting Tips

      very nice tips :) !!

also .. ttake this one from a real experienced pilot ...

when u are after him , just before you COMPLETELY lock-on the aircraft , there is another stage , its like half-lock-on .. he will here a low pieeeeeppp .. ( when u completely lock , he will here a loud PIEEEEPPP ) ..

anyway .. when you are half-locked and he heares the low piep , he will not pay attention to is ( especially, if he is flying straight to a target !! ) .. so when u are half locked .. wait ONE second ,, then release 2 or 3 missiles ... cus the first might not hit !! ( depends on ur timing ! ) while the missiles are in the air .. you will comletely LOCK-ON him , he will try to take a sharp move but it will be just too late cuz the missiles are only one meter or less behind him and they are LOCKED !! next thing you see ...

      [ArabiaN]^ScOrpiOnZ^ ( MiG-29 Fulcrum ) I AM THE BEST PILOT! ( killed )

      ( realy u r huh ?! hahaha )

I wonder about his one. If you want the kill, don't fly over the AA. I was playing last night against a pretty good pilot (I'm not that experienced) & I couldn't really take him down. I would get him smoking badly, but never kill him. I decided to use his own aa against him. flew right over it, him chasing me, looped and got behind him. That missile lock went wild, flew past me & finished him off.

Tried it again & it worked 3 more times. I got a bit bored of not killing him, so I let another team mate take over the flying & I went down to get up close & personal- good ol' shotty .

Actually you're right. If you can time it so that the enemy AA missile gets a lock on you, they release, then you get out of range or break their lock the missile WILL hit the enemy.

This of course means that you KNOW that someone is on the ground with a lock on you. You can pretty much assume that there is someone in ground AA when you fly near the carrier.

            Re: Dogfighting Tips

Being a good pilot is very simple. In any case, I haven't been shot down for the past 5 days at all by an enemy jet. To avoid a missile from an enemy jet, simply pull away to your 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock immediately. Do not wait and dilly dally, unless you are just a few moments away from bombing your target. To be a good pilot, however, you MUST have a joystick, and not just any cheap old joystick, but one that comes with 3D-Rudder Twist and some customisable buttons. If you have rudder pedals, then rudder twist is not needed.

Firstly, what do you do when you hear the beep? What you gotta do immediately is to turn as hard as you can. Try to make a very sharp turn by angling your plane 180 degrees vertically and pulling your joystick hard to one side. Complementary rudder in the same direction would also help quite alot. By turning after you hear the beep sound, you have a 95% chance of evading any missiles, unless your ping is very high, and your enemy released the missiles as soon as he got a lock on your tail.

And now, to missile evading tactics. As mentioned, you can make a sharp turn in hopes of shaking of the dear missile, or if you want to make it look more dramatic, like the ones in the movies, fly VERY LOW to the ground, hopefully near a crane. When you are right beside the crane, turn away and let the missile hit the crane. Now, this is Hollywood eh? You could also fly low on a mountain, and suddenly pull up. Doing all this requires a joystick though, or a very sensitive mouse, in case you fly too low and need to make minor increaments in altitude.

One thing I learnt in Battlefield 2 of how to never lose a dogfight is to keep on turning. This is the lamest and most time-consuming method. I once faced a good pilot in Kubra Dam which I can never seem to shake off. In the end, I just kept on turning very sharply in circles... Turn, and turn, and turn, till the round ends. This is really the lamest method, and you are only testing your enemy's patience. If he pulls out of the fight, go after him and fire.

One more thing I should add; do not fire 2 missiles the moment you get a lock. Make sure that your enemy is not making any turns or whatsoever. If he is making any evasive movements, just follow him and open up your cannons on him. It is very effective, and should you run out of missiles, you could shoot him down just by firing the cannons alone. I will add some more next time, after I get some screen shots. It is hard to explain without any illustrations.

to keep on turning is to lose the battle. Once i have the enemy aircraft pilots scared, they become ineffective, which is the most important thing. They have to keep watching their backs or they will die and i will spawn rape you if you fight like a coward in the air. If you die like a man, i might just let you in the air again. See how nice i am?

Actually I just learned that you can manually edit the CONTROLS.CON file and set the mouse sentivity to 30. In the GUI you can only set the sensitivity maximum to 10.

Someone tried to do that to me, but I just shot him with my guns as we both went though the tunnel...

Unfortunately I rammed into his wreckage...
