I chose to be the AT-guy as he seams to be the only choice that can face all threats – infantry, armour and helicopters. I quickly realised that he’s miss-named, he’s just not that anti-tank. But he’s defiantly strong and important.
So here’s my guide on the AT guy. (For new AT’s)
Anti-Armour-General.
What ever armour you’re attacking needs more than one hit, so try and attack it from a direction the turret isn’t pointing, from the rear is nearly always best. Retire to cover and attack again from a new position. Your victim will be looking for your smoke trails so don’t walk back into it. Attacking from above is nearly always favourable if the armour has no infantry support.
Occupy the low ground, try and arc your shot to hit the underbelly. This way, even if you die, your shot will still hit.
Learning to fire without having to zoom in is worth its weight in gold. You can dumb fire by releasing the trigger, or steer it while holding down the trigger.
Don't shoot in a straight line. I get taken out a lot by armour, but by curving my shot (I use a left -> right arc) I almost always hit them.
Another tip...
When you want to kill a unit that's far, far away, aim high above him or to his sides. Let the missile fly for a while, and then put your crosshairs on your target.
This way, he won’t hear the "Beep-beep-beep-beeeeeeeeep" warning sound long enough to dodge the missile.
You can also use the alarm to intimidate a tank crew and (hopefully) get them to jump out and find you – Kill them with your smg and steal the tank.
ALWAYS size up your enemy. My general rule of thumb if I have no friendly troops near me is as follows:
1 Armour = run/hide/spot him on the minimap.
If you can find cover that allows you to easily run to 3 sides of it, attack. Otherwise, hang tight, let him cap the flag & move on.
1 Armour + infantry = take out infantry 1st, armour 2nd.
The reason for this is that you're more likely to get killed while steering your projectile causing you to miss anyways. I can usually take out an infantryman or two & get close enough to pop a missile into the armour before I'm taken out.
Multiple armour = HIDE! Crawl someplace that allows you to get a few shots in before they pinpoint you.
Helicopters = Keep running around corners. If the helo is there to hovercap, pop a round off at the window. The pilot will take off immediately. If the helo is moving & far enough away that your missile can't reach it within 2-3 seconds, save your shot.
Vehicles
Light vehicles.
Not really armour but a fairly easy source of kills, there often fully manned or two manned. On the downside there fast, small and agile. Crossing targets need a lot of lead and the lead increases with range of target. Targets moving directly away can be hit but only fire the missile if there close and wont reach dead ground before you reach him. Head on is the easiest to hit, aim quite low, as long as you hit he’ll stop dead, go prone and if you miss there’s a chance he’ll pass clean over you. Static targets just hit them.
Vodnik and Hummer
Bigger targets and a little tougher, undamaged they need a missile and a bit more to destroy, a bit more doesn’t mean another missile. So hit them with the missile switch to the smg and spray the last bit off. After some experimenting it seems that nearly all areas will lead to the vehicles death but after a short fire, the crew will die if they don’t bail and run for it, be ready with the smg.
Apcs
Need two missiles and then don’t immediately explode. On the flat and downhill there extremely fast rear attacks might see you only getting the chance to fire one shot, but front on gets you blown to pieces by the Apcs guns. Up hills a different matter, there slow and ripe for rear attacks. If your defending a flag in a built up area get high above there gun elevation and rain down death.
Tanks
This is your main job. Tanks are easy to hit, being big and slow. Attacking front on opens you up to main armament, mg and secondary mg attack. If you attack from this angle make it count, aim for the front of the tracks, then run for cover if you get away you need to hit the front tracks or rear again if you want to finish it in two missiles. Crews tend to jump when the tanks 75% damaged so try to get it to half damage either with one front/rear track, rear shot or two other shots and then make sure the killing shot hits the front or rear tracks this way you’ll get the kills you deserve rather than the crew bailing and killing you on foot. Also consider spraying the second gunner out of the tank with your smg if he gives you the chance but not at the expense of putting an AT round in the tank.
Heli’s
You can really hurt these if there hovering over a flag or at least scare them off. Once there speeding away save your missiles. Stay under the attack heli’s where there gun cant point down on you.
As for helicopters, the safest spot is right under the machine ... However if you want to hit one moving away from you, fire the rocket ahead of the chopper and then move the aiming reticle onto the chopper (makes it alot easier to bring down a fleeing helicopter).
- shoot on the window of attack choppers, does more damage and sometimes you just shoot the gunner out
- BH, shoot in the dam thing, you kills some guys sitting in them.
And Infantry
The AT missile is deadly against infantry, especially prone infantry. If there too far for the smg give them a missile. Close up people tend to jump the explosion so aim for the chest but you should be using your smg anyway.
AT in tanks/Apc
If your in a tank and meet another remember you’ve an extra AT shot in your hand so jump out as soon as the tanks a mess and finish him by hand.
Conclusion
Your never going to get a world record score, but you’re the only ranged anti-armour deterrent, get in an AT squad and you can stop an assault before it begins. If your alone you might be the only thing that can get the tank off the flag, either attack early- get killed, respawn finish him off. Or be sneaky and take him without being seen.
There’s some debate as to how many hits each vehicle takes, I experimented today
Light Jeep – 1 hit anywhere
Hummer/Vodnik – 1 hit, front or rear. Much of the side goes in 1 hit, rear side takes 2. Front wheel (from the side) took 20 hits and didn’t blow – can’t understand that. Couldn’t get an instant explosion anywhere – but a brief fire then explosion.
Apcs – 2 hits, fire then explosion again could not get an instant explosion. Although it’s often said that a hit between the centre two wheels on the LAV is an instant death, I couldn’t get this to happen.
Tanks – 2 hits to either the front of the tracks, rear of the tracks, rear of the vehicle, top of the tank or the bottom of the tank destroy it. 3 hits to the tracks from the side destroy the tank. 4 hits anywhere else.
