    Re: Supersonic

Airspeed is only measured in knots in real life.
You wanna know why you only go faster at higher altitudes? because gas turbines operate best at 35000 ft (about 12000 metres), up there the temp. is at a constant -57 degrees Celcius and enters the compressors already pressurised and basically ignites with the fuel/air mixture a lot easier

whenever i get caught way up high, i just start going backwards, then when i get to about 500 i hit the afterburners, ALWAYS works unless i get into deserter zone

i dunno why u guys like the other planes ?! i just looohoooovvee the MiG-29 Fulcrum ! i owned sooo many F-35's and F-18's with it ! being not more then 5 times downed ... 3 of the 5 times was by a USS-Carrier anti air ! ! !

the MiG is and stays the best !

                      Re: Supersonic

In BF2 all countries use the Metric system. Yes, the metric and SI system is way better than the Imperial system. The F-35/J-10/F-18 don't differ too much in speed, if at all. Also, going higher makes you lose control (and let's you go faster), just like getting outside the map. You're not flying supersonic, you're just entering the outskirts of the map (there is no unlimited height).
Now you'd probably say, Anzen is talking bullsh*t. But answer me this first, what's the point in going supersonic in a map that's only like 1.5kmx1.5km...That wouldn't be fun at all, aside from that, from the height of 900m, you wouldn't be able to hit something on purpose at all in BF2.

(The height of the Aircraft Carier is 22m according to the F-35B, J-10, F-18, Su-30 and Su-34 (didn't test the US bomber, but they use the same system as all the other planes)).

                        Re: Supersonic

The speed of the jets in BF2 is greatly exagerated. The speed of sound varies with altitude and other variables buts its roughly around 750 knotts at sea level and roughly 600 knotts at 35,000 feet. A real FA-18s top speed is about mach 1.7 and a F-15 about mach 2.5 but they have to be at high altitude to achieve these speeds. In a real jet you would never even be able to reach a speed of 1000 knotts at all in this game given the confines of the map ( you would need a much bigger map). As far as altitude it is greatly reduced in this game. A real FA-18 could reach a ceiling of about 60,000 feet and a real F-15 about 104,000 feet although if a decompression occured at that kind of altitude it would kill the pilot instantly. A real F-15 would be the fastest of all the jets in this game although in the game I dont think it is. In real life the only fighter plane with a higher top speed than the F-15 is the MIG-25. They are both high altitude planes and cant haul that kind of ass at low levels. In real life the FA-18 would be the slowest in the game.

                          WRONG

I think you'll find the speed of sound is aprox 661.47 knots at sea level
thats 761.20 mph or 1225.04 kph or just to be a right smart arse twat 340.29 meters/s

Also the speed of sound at 30000 ft is 589.34 knots again thats 678.2 mph or 1091.46 kph or to be a bigger smart arse 303.18 meters/s

That means at 35000ft its 576.13 knots yes you guessed its 663 mph or 1067
km/h and again just to wind everyone up 296.39 meters/s

Please note that the speed of sound does change with Atmospheric temperature and these figures are all ideal figures taken from my 'CRP-1' Computer.

True Airspeed would have to be taken with a pioto probe (see picture)

Oh and on the point of Distance reqired to accelerate to mach 1.1 the initial (thats from takeoff) climb rate of the Mig-29 is about 330meters/s which is only 10meters/s short of the speed of sound and since it can climb vertically to around 1000ft in less than a second, it would seem to indicate that theoreticly should it level out and start a decent to 300ft it could accellerate to about 370meters/s in aproximatly 1000meters

Granted the physics of this game dont do justice to the true laws of physics but it is very possible to achieve mach 1.1 in a short horizontal distance but within the game it is slightly unrealistic due to the lack of hight.

                          End of rant =]

check your facts before posting man.

                            Re: Supersonic

Sorry dude but I wasnt wrong. 661 knotts is roughly around 750 knotts. If I had meant exactly 750 knotts I would have said so. I didnt look it up in a book like you did. I just knew it. If I would have had to look it up in a book I would have given exact numbers. 661 knotts is roughly (oh I forgot you like exact numbers) I mean exactly 760.15 mph.

                            {Granted the physics of this game dont do justice to the true laws of physics but it is very possible to achieve mach 1.1 in a short horizontal distance but within the game it is slightly unrealistic due to the lack of hight.}

Slightly? No plane in the world has ever gone faster then mach 1.25 at or near sea level. Mach 1.25 is LESS than 1000 knotts at or near sea level and in fact at altitude also. And the MIG 29 cant do Mach 1.25 at sea level. The MIG 23 can but there are no MIG 23s in the game. No Mig 29 at low altitude can reach 861 knotts (mach 1.25) much less 1000 knotts.

My point that the speed is highly exagerated still stands firm.

All of those time to climb figures are done with a stripped down unloaded plane that doesnt even have a full fuel tank anyway.

                              Re: Supersonic

accually the climb figures are with a standard combat loadout

secondly how the feck is a diffrence of almost 90 make your around

most people would take "around 750 knots" to mean between "740 and 760 knots"

did i say mach 1.25 or 1000 knots??? NO i quote
it would seem to indicate that theoreticly should it level out and start a decent to 300ft it could accellerate to about 370meters/s in aproximatly 1000meters
                              notice two things
                              A: 370meters/s is 719.22knots thus nowhear near 1000knots or mach1.25 (826.83 knots)
B: Theoreticly.. yes the distance is probably too small
                              C: watch this ( yes its a 33year old jet doing mach 1.1 at under 100ft ) http://www.aldebaran.cz/animace/Phy_sound.mpg

i didnt have to look up the speed of sound in knots, because i know it in m/s and knots without reference. the conversion calculations are quite easy, granted more so with a flight computer but any idiot can use the web for the same purpose.

Slightly? No plane in the world has ever gone faster then mach 1.25 at or near sea level. They have.. but not in level /stable flight... several jets can fly super sonic at very low altitude but they encounter problems with thermals and air depresions because of changing terrain/sea level's and thus are only flown low when it is absoloutly nessesary i.e. after hitting a target with a low altitude bombing run ( its about time to afterburn the **** outa their below effective sam radar range (50-100ft)

p.s. its spelt knots! not knotts

Because I was quoting off the top of my head not looking it up after I decided to debate it like you.

I apologize for expecting you to keep up that far back but the 1000 knotts (sp opps my bad) figure came from my post before last.

"In a real jet you would never even be able to reach a speed of 1000 knotts at all in this game given the confines of the map ( you would need a much bigge"

As for the time to climb figures they are done both ways but a MIG-29 can climb to 6000 meters in 55 seconds with NO load at all.

                                {They have.. but not in level /stable flight... several jets can fly super sonic at very low altitude but they encounter problems with thermals and air depresions because of changing terrain/sea level's and thus are only flown low when it is absoloutly nessesary i.e. after hitting a target with a low altitude bombing run ( its about time to afterburn the **** outa their below effective sam radar range (50-100ft)}

I should have said in level flight but tell me how much of a dive are you going to go into at sea level? Personally speaking just for me, about 0 degrees.

Mach 1.25 came from the highest speed ever aqquired at sea level (in level flight if you prefer I say that even though you have to remain in level flight at sea level unless you are somewhere where AGL is way below sea level). About 861 knotts (sp oops my bad) The planes I know of that are in service that have done it are the Mig23, B1B, B1A prototype, and British tornado. The F-105 has done it also. The F-111 F might have done it too but Im not 100% certain about that. There might be more but not that Im aware of.
