    Minimum port requirements

    Hi all,

    Can anyone tell me the minimum ports that need to be open given the following requirements:

    1. I just want to play the game as a client. I'm not running a server or any **** like that
    2. I would like to be able to take part in VOIP or at least listen to the conversations

    I currently have one port being forwarded (can't remember what one) but the game is working fine. I can only hear voip on certain servers though.

    The number of ports required for this game is really taking the ****. It's totally unnecessary. Whats even more annoying is that fact that I'm next to certain that the client needs them all open. I mean, there is no way I'm opening 1024 - 5000 on my firewall - and it £"$"%ing shoddy that I should even need to.

    Anyway, rant over.

    Does anyone know if there is a definitive list of ports that

    a. Are actually necessary for the client
    b. Describes specifically what the ports are used for.

    I remember I found a list showing this but I can't find it any more.

    Thanks all

    a. The ones listed in the manual are the ones that you need to open for the client to ensure that the game never crashes due to a port issue I'd guess. I don't know of people selecting which to open and which to not open.

    b. Here are some from here :

    * 6667 (IRC)
    * 3783 (Voice Chat Port)
    * 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
    * 28900 (Master Server List Request)
    * 29900 (GameSpy Connection Manager)
    * 29901 (GameSpy Search Manager)
    * 13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
    * 6515 (Dplay UDP)
    * 6500 (Query Port)

      Thanks for that - you are a life saver!

      It's kinda weird, cause I've only opened one port on my firewall. I think it has todo with a lot of those ports being client initiated (so the firewall lets them through). Most firewalls block unsolicited incoming packets as opposed to user initiated outgoing.

      I was wondering - does battlefield always use gamespy servers or is that only when you start the game using the gamespy client?

      Thanks gain for your help

        Here are the ones listed in the manual/readme file.

        ================================================== ======================
        CLIENT AND SERVER PORTS
        ================================================== ======================

        Hosting a Battlefield 2 Server
        In order to host a Battlefield 2 server, you must have the following ports open in your firewall.

        Server Ports:

        UDP 27900
        UDP/TCP 29900
        TCP 80
        TCP 4711
        UDP 27901
        UDP 1500-4999
        UDP/TCP 1024-1124
        UDP 29900
        UDP/TCP 27900
        UDP 16567
        UDP 55123-55125

        Hope their the ones you want... Althought these are for hosting a server, not playing.

          Re: Minimum port requirements

          Hi thanks for that,

          I've got the ones in the manual. What I really wanted to know is if anyone had any experience on running less than these - I'm certain half of them are not essential given that I've only opened one at the game works fine.

          It really is pretty stupid to require that many ports be open - not only is it unsecure and unnecessary - many hardware firewalls will only forward on ten ports meaning a large number of users are totally screwed - It's just total laziness on the part of the devs (imho)

          Kindest regards

            Re: Minimum port requirements

            I don't forward any ports on my BEFSR41 v1 except 16567 and I don't think I'm experiencing any port-related problems (and I think that port is only for hosting).

            This is the page I would visit for my router if I had any port issues:

                    Well, if you visit:
                    Open ports on your router with our port forwarding guides. We have guides specific to your router.

                    and find the model of your router, you'll see an entire section on how to configure BF2
