    DIY Laptop?

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting myself a laptop. But the thing is that i dont want to have to pay all the extra $$$ that the big companies like Dell, Alienware.. etc, charge for puttin it together and all. So i was wondering if it was possible to put together your own? I've built pc's a few times now, but i have never heard of doing it for a laptop.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Happy Gaming,

Laptops are proprietary (SP?), meaning taht nothing has a standard. You can get stuff like HD's, videocards, and RAM easily enough, but I dont think yhou will be able to do the case, mobo, or PSU. I saw a couple of blank laptop kits (basically generic cases, mobo, and battery) on newegg one time, but they were expensive and only lasted about a week. Your best bet imo for a laptop is going to be going through a company.

I have a dell inspiron 8200, p4 1.7 512mb ram, complete with a 64mb radeon mobility 9000... played DC on it all the time :)

If youre considering one for gaming, take note - order the best vid card u can, its usually on board, not a card, and upgrading later is basically impossible.

I've have used for work, IBM thinkpad, Toshiba and Dell laptops. I've worked on various diffrent models and I would rate the IBM higher then the dell. The dell I have now, Latitude D510, resalution sucks (highest is 1024x768).

Never buy Toshiba, we had about 20 of them and they all died in 2 years. HD issues, Video Card issues, internal battary going bad.

Personally, the only reason I use a laptop is cause I travel for work. Otherwise I would rather spend the money on a desktop PC.

                              Re: DIY Laptop?

Word has it that they are beginning to produce parts for DIY laptops. So far, I have not seen them to be economical. If you think about it - all the big brands out there have proprietary stuff in them - due to size constraints and how the innerds are put together.

I would love to see this come to fruition. I have made plenty of money in the past building PC's and even had my own company doing so. I was always asked if I could build laptops.

Hopefully a standard will be set and it will be more of an option than it is right now.
