New video card problems.

I just installed a new Nvidia 6800 Ultra today and now I cant get BF2 to load.

I was playing on a 5900 Ultra and it played fine.

I just DLed the lastest drivers for Nvidia, I used a driver scubber to start fresh. All my other games play fine but for some reason when i try and start BF2 the screen goes black and then it kicks me back to the desktop.....right before it would normally say "EA games, challenge everything".

The only thing Ive changed since this morning (when I last played BF2) and now is the card and driver.

Any idea where to start?

My Direct X version is up to date as well.

I called tech support for the new card....they walked me through a few things, theyre stumped as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure your refresh rate is not locked

Do a search on here for disabling your game videos at the start of the loading!
Then, try again, without the loading of them, it may work!

When I upgraded my video card, I had to uninstall and then reinstall. It wouldn't reinstall at first either, I had to manually uninstall (directions on EAs site.)

I think the game is sensative to hardware changes.

Go into ..\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\000X\

X=1,2,3... depending on how many profiles you have. In most cases the folder is 0001. Delete or move the 0001.

Start up BF2, at login screen click Manage Accounts and retrieve your account. Now you have your old account but with BF2 default settings.

Instead of deleting the entire 0001 folder, you can also first edit profile.con in said folder and set it to e.g. 800x600@60Hz if the problem is releated to refresh rate.

Also deleting all the folders with long alphanumeric names in ..\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\ is a good idea.

Patch 1.03 installed OK - but I get the black-screen to desktop.
Have tried a remove/install of BF2 - then patch.
Nvidia 78.01 drivers in use - have scrubbed and reinstalled.
Refresh rate settings all conform.
It took me two weeks to get running with patch 1.02, ...it looks like I'll have the same with this.

Did you delete the old profiles when uninstalling?? The unistall ask you if you want to keep them.

If you didn't, then it will still use the old profiles in ..\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\ and if the problem lies there this should be wiped when unistalling/reinstalling.

When you uninstall, make sure the folder where BF2 was installed and the Battlefiled 2 folder in My documents were removed, if not do it yourself before reinstalling. You can always retrieve your login setttings again in the Manage Accounts in BF2.

I uninstalled the game, figuring a reinstall might help. When I popped in my disk, it asked me for the CD key. I grabbed the DVD case and looked for the CD key and then remembered that the key is on the manual.




I threw the manual away last week. My CD key is in a landfill somewhere.


Ive been playing PC games since I owned a Commodor 64. Long before they even started issuing CD keys with games. Ive never had a CD key on the manual before. I never keep a manual.

What do I do now, short of buying another copy?

Look in regedit.exe and navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2\ergc]

If the uninstall didn't remove it and if the 1.03 didn't encrypt it properly it, it will be there. If it's more than 20 characters it is encrypted.

Maybe you can do a System Restore to when you only had 1.02 installed, and then look in registry again.

Start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

I looked for it running reg edit and the folder was gone. I hadnt thought of doing a restore.

I did it and bingo....there it was.

I reinstalled the game and now its running like a champ.

The new card absolutely blows my old card out of the water.
