Heyas,
I am stymied and quite frustrated at this point. Every time I enter a MP game I crash hard and it reboots; I get about 15 seconds of good video and sound then black screen reboot with no warning or lock prior.
My specs:
AMD 64 3700
1GB PC 3500 XMS Expert (2x512)
ATI Radeon 800 256mb AGP
Gigabyte Nforce Ultra 2 mobo
Audigy 2 Gamer
2x36GB Raptor SATA Raid
1x120GB WD SATA
1 CDRW Combo IDE
Mitsumi Floppy w/ 7-in-1 Card Reader built in
All latest approved drivers (plus tried Audigy beta drivers)
WinXP Pro SP2, all patched current
Clean image, no extra crap running services wise
WinXP managed drive cache, have tried it both on the raid array as well as on my 2nd storage HD, even did a manual cache setting (double ram).
Okay, I have scanned and searched this forum and others for a while. I have reloaded my machine. I have disabled the Nvidia Nic in favor of the 10/100 NIC. Disabled the firewire on the MOBO and the audigy card. Disabled the Card reader. Uninstalled the Audigy and went with onboard sound. Disabled EAX in game. Ran PBweb update repeatedly (successful). 1024 res, most at high or medium, but for kicks tried changing/lowering different video aspects. HW sound, medium and high both tried.
I started getting this after the first patch, not before. Decided to do a clean reload of my boxen for multiple reasons, clean install (DVD version) of BF2 and patched to the 2nd patch directly. Problem persisted. Tried most of the above fixes and chalked it up to the patches, waited on the 3rd patch. Uninstalled BF2 and deleted it's folders, cleaned registry, reinstalled and patched the 3rd patch directly. The problem persists.
It runs on my lappy but also does the same exact thing on a PIV 3.02HT box with an AIW and Audigy 2 Plat.
At this point I am throwing my hands up in the air. I love this game but can't play at all.
My gaming rig plays every other game I have perfectly with no problems, and I get most of the new PC releases as I am a pretty avid gamer. It should do fine with BF2 but doesn't.
At this point I can't find anything more to try. I am certainly not going to reimage again given that eveyrthing else I have runs and everything benches perfect; throw in that it does it on my wife's machine (the intel) rig and I don't think it's that - but I am open to suggestions to try out.
The only common thread I can come up with is my router. It's a compex unit 10/100/1G with wireless and a firewall. The proper ports are open but I have noticed that it can become 'saturated' if I run something like Bearshare and do multiple file searches. In all my years in the IT industry I haven't run across nor heard of a router hard rebooting a PC, plus I can game online fine with games like UT2K4 (and mods), QIII, COD, DOW, etc.
Help?
