Here's my whole story, as i know many of you are experiencing similar difficulties with this new 1.03 Patch.
I bought BF2 when it was released a while ago. It installed and play fine, no worries. Then i went off the game altogether for quite some time - about a week ago. At this time i began to ache for some more BF2 action, so i decided to plug 'er in and start up the game. This is where my problems begin. It started up fine, just like the good 'ole days, and then when i tried to play single player, it crashed to desktop. It crashed only AFTER i clicked 'Start Game' or whatever that button is that transports you to the loading/map info screen. It just crashed to the desktop. I try again, but the same thing happens. I decide to try multiplayer, but exact same thing. Keep in mind i do not have the 1.02 patch that was released at some point in time of which i was unaware.
Battlefield 2 worked for me only 3 - 4 months ago, but now it has suddenly locked the door on me. "Why is this?", i thought to myself - it was then that i learned the 1.03 patch had just been released. I take a go at it and of all the rotten luck, the patch won't work for me: "Can't Find Install Folder for Battlefield 2" was the exact error message. I did a search on these forums as well as several others and found that problem (probably) lies within my registry for the game - it doesnt know where to go. I decided to uninstall/reinstall the game, but i can't even uninstall! The thing says it's setting up InstallShield for the Uninstall, progress bar goes all the way, i get a tiny flash of teal on my screen, then absolutley nothing!
I've decifered that this most likely has something to do with my registry - so i looked up the 'regedit' to see what i've got as far as BF2 registry, and guess what i find? A big gaping whole where the registry for BF2 should be. Here's a screenshot:
This, in my opinion, is root of my problems. I can't uninstall because BF2 doesnt know where it is. I can't install the patch because the patch doesn't know where BF2 is.
I've tried cleaning the registry with many different tools, including a tool called "TuneUp Utilities 2006" that worked for another guy in another thread - unfortunatley, it did nothing for me.
Is this my problem, or am i hallucinating? Is there a known fix? Is there ANY way other than a reformat to fix this beast?
Thanks,
ParkerM
