You can redeem your points by connecting to the EA Weapons Upgrades Department (EAWUD) server, and browsing and picking the upgrades you desire.

You get a weapon upgrade when you get a new rank. They're not every 1000 points. There is a post on the top of this board with rank information.

Upgrades are at 500, 800, 2500, 5000, 8000, 20000, and 50000 pts

If you own SF, you get 2 unlocks for every rank higher than Sergeant.
