Well, I've been playing BF2 for a few days now at a local LAN Cafe. It's been a heck of a lot of fun. So, I decided to take the plunge and purchase it. Of course, nothing ever runs smoothly.
Right now, the Battlefield 2 splash screen shows up for a couple of seconds and then immediately disappears. The game doesn't load. Instant CTD, so-to-speak. I notice that the BF2.exe process (seeming to weigh in at a mere 10MB upon initial start-up) appears in task manager for just a couple seconds, and then disappears, so nothing is happening in the background after the crash for sure.
I've tried that moniter refresh rate fix by changing the refresh rate back to 60 from my usual 70 (which is a ridiculous notion anyhow, considering it's almost impossible to comfortably read some moniters at 60h), however that did not work.
First off, my system specs:
- XP SP1
- Intel P4 2.5Ghz CPU
- 768 MB Ram
- Radeon 9600SE 128MB -- Latest Catalyst drivers.
- DX 9.0c
- All of my drivers are up-to-date. I'm a whore about that.
Whenever I first installed the installer froze up on me just as it was setting up my mic volume levels. It totally froze the entire system and I had to hard boot to get it back again. After that I totally uninstalled BF2. Removed all traces of it in the system, from registry keys to installer files.
After I removed everything I cleaned out all of the installer temp files, booted the system up in selective startup, reinstalled successfully. No freeze on the mic setup this time, however, and the installer finished out successfully, if you could call it that. Any game offering to install any software relating to Gamespy is a failure anyways :laugh:. After that, tried running the game again. Same problem. Instant 'ctd' to desktop. Do not pass go. Do not play Battlefield 2. Same splash-screen insta-crash as before.
So right now i'm on the cusp of reformatting the HD and reinstalling windows, most likey with Service Pack 2. Now, knowing my luck I'm most likely going to get this error again, so if anybody has any useful suggestions I'd appreciate them.
I'll report back when my system's online again, tell you if anything fixes itself.
