BF2 crashes to desktop when I try and join a server

    Hi All,

Have been posting here for a few days now. Been a big BF fan since it's first incarnations. Got wired up to broadband today and was looking forward to my first frag-fest online.

    Specs are:

    Internet: 2.2mbps
    Processor: 3.0ghz
    Ram: 1gb
    HD space: loads
    Patch: 1.03

I created my new online account, went to the server browser and every time I try and connect, one of 2 things happens:

    1) Lose connection with server
    2) BF2 goes back to desktop after dying.

    Has anybody else experienced this?

    Thanks in advance!

    What video card?

    Update all of your drivers?

Does your firewall/router allow BF2 to play though properly?

Also try a forum search, I know this has been covered, not sure if there is an answer as of yet.

Video card is NVidia GEForceFX 5900XT, 128mb
Latest driver was downloaded this very evening.
Have tried both with and without XP Firewall.

Not sure if GFX is an issue. Have been playing single player for a while now to get some practice in..

This could be related to your broadband connection being connected, the only thing i can suggest is reinstall the game.

Thanks, I'll do this now and report back.

          ** EDIT**

Everytime I hit "Remove" from control panel, or Uninstall from the menu, the wizard pops up, the progress bar "progresses", screen flashes and it stops trying to un-install... bizarre...

          ** EDIT Part 2 **

Even running a re-install from the DVD causes the same thing. Can't seem to remove it. Damn!

yea i'm having this problem too now.... like i'l double click BF2 on my desktop and it will short out and minimize back to the desktop, so i click it and the whol EA games thing pops up in the begin, i log in , and then i click a server.

i get as far as the "Joining Server" message before the game just goes to a black screen and then cuts out completely

this has only happened since the 1.03 patch.... and i think i played it once after the 1.03 patch... dunno why this is happening now, never has happened before.

i've been able to run the game before fine, but this is something new i've never seen.

I had the same problem this evening. I reinstalled the game and everything worked again. I suggest you try the same.

See, this is the 2nd part of my issue :) It won't let me un-install/re-install..

                  Ok, an update:

Because I couldn't un-install, I killed the folder. Ran a regclean, Re-installed DX9.0c, rebooted. When I try and install from DVD, boom, same thing, can't install it.

Go to www.spywareguide.com and run the free online scanner from the left hand menu.

Thanks. I did this, but it found nothing...

                        ** EDIT **

                        Situation is now as follows:

                        * I have deleted the BF2 folder and Battlefield 2 folder in "My Documents"
                        * RegClean has been run
                        * Still says "Battlefield 2" in Add/Remove programs. Any attempt to 'Remove' causes the progress wizard to appear, gets to end, bombs out.
                        * Any attempt to RE-install from DVD or by manual install (as with EA's tech support site), causes same issue. Progress bar, then bombs out.

I'm now stuck without Single or Multiplayer BF2, and am pretty much about to call it a f'ing day!

                            Try doing a disk cleanup.
Find and download from the net "TuneUp tools", install it and use it to help uninstalling that s***er.
Later, download ur patch from other locations, becuz that seemed to me a problem from there... I had it too n solved w/ a new patch file.

You're an absolute star. It worked a treat. I got "TuneUp Utilities 2006". Ran every clean-up thing it suggested. Rebooted. BF2 re-installed (wow), Patch installed cleanly, a few issues not connecting to servers but then, it worked. No lag, no issues, just clean fun.
