How do you unlock kits?

Hey, Im new to BF2 and I was just wondering how you unlock kits??? If anyone could tell me the answer, that would be awesome!!! Im sure this will be a helpful thread once the answer gets posted!!

You gain points during the game and gain in rank. As you gain ranks you gain unlocks.

Yes, but you also need to quit the game and restart it for it to ask you what you want to unlock.

OK, thanks alot both of you!!! LOL, you saved me alot of searching on the internet. I just unlocked my first gun yesterday, I chose the medic upgrade. Can anyone tell me how often we get to choose upgrades?
