    Severe Lag once daily

Normally I can play BF2 lag free (depending on the server) but on all servers I will get severe unplayable lag (like slide show, less then 10fps) for like 30 seconds, then all is normal for the rest of the night.

It is always accompanied by my HD light remaining on almost solid. So something is accessing my HD hard. Clearing a cache, Setting a system restore point. I am not sure. But it normally only happens once an evening.

I have asked my buddies, many times (on ventrilo) when it happens and no one else is lagging. I have even heard a couple of them complain of the same. I have run a program that optimizes WinXP it is called "GameXP" I don't have the lag problem any longer but that program does many more changes that I don't like and simply cannot undo.

I am trying to find that option or what in XPpro is causing this. Anyone with similar problems and may have found the solution?

I have searched the forums and did not find any threads on this subject. I cannot believe I am alone on this. I think many are just putting up with it as I have.

System Restore or any number of schedueled tasks could be running. I would make sure that some program is not updating like anti virus, Windows, etc...

Well, it could be a number of things, I can't tell you for sure...

First, the obvious. You don't have any scheduled tasks do you? Like virus scanner updates, or anything in Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks?
(Disabled the Task Scheduler service yet?)

Otherwise, when it happens, quickly get out of the game and hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your task manager, go to the processes tab and look for a process that is using up some CPU. That's your culprit.
You'll then need to find out where it's starting up from and disable it.
If it looks like some dodgy piece of adware/spyware then "Hijack This!" should be able to get rid of it for you (run it in safe mode if you need to).

        Good luck!

LOL - We posted at the same time. But about disabling this service. I am pretty sure that Service should be left alone unless you have an expert understanding of the way your OS and its programs operate. It's not the same as it was in the days of Win 98.

I don't think it is system restore. The restore points set are not during the time in the evening when I am normally playing. Already thought about that one. I don't care to disable it, don't want to loose my safety net. It has come in handy before. I have even tried setting a manual restore point before gaming and I still had the problem and I checked later and there was not a new restore point created. I have my virus scan scheduled for Sunday morning at 0500 when I will absolutely not be playing.

Windows automatic update check. Just thought of that, possible?????
Will kill it and let you all know here if problem goes away.

Will give that a try. When I have this lag, it take over the computer. Ctl - Alt - Del gets nothing until the lag is gone and the computer catches up with me then goes to that screen. Then it is too late.
