Tweakguides Guru critizes BF2 (quite rightly)

The excellent Tweakguides man critizes BF2 in the way that it has gone. Unfortuneately I totally agree - sequel of best ever game has been let down by EA/Dice:

    Battlefield 2 Patch 1.03 Problems
    7 October 2005

"I'm aware that a whole bunch of you have had various problems, both with installing the 1.03 BF2 patch, as well problems playing BF2 after the patch. Unfortunately there aren't many solutions other than the ones I've linked to on page 3 of my guide. More recently The Inquirer has raised concerns about the patch and CD Key Issues. The hits just keep coming with this patch. I don't usually post editorial opinions about games, but I am fairly ****ed off at the state in which EA Games have left Battlefield 2.

I started out really enjoying BF2, but after the first few weeks as players discovered the strengths and weaknesses of the various vehicles and weapons, the game started to crumble before my eyes. Everyone started racking up huge points with cheap tactics like loading up Blackhawk choppers with Engineers, making them invincible airborne point-whoring platforms. Then the virtually-impossible-to-hit Jets came to the fore. Then people started bunnyhopping like crazed jackrabbits. So I waited with hope that after 3 months of this crap, EA would bail us out with the 1.03 patch. Guess what - the 171MB patch hasn't fixed any of the major problems with the game, and in fact has created more bugs and problems for a lot of people.

I apologize for the rant, but really, is it that hard for a multi-million dollar entertainment company like EA Games to actually spend 3 months creating a genuinely useful and tightly-coded patch? Or is it more likely that once they have our money, they view the patch more as a favor, or perhaps as a means of keeping us hanging on so we buy their 'Special Forces Expansion Pack'? Well either way BF2 has lost its flavor for me, and EA Games have cemented their reputation as a company with no commitment to quality in my eyes."

its all well and good saying "oh this should have been fixed that should have been tweaked". tell me, how would you fix the blackhawk so that people dont get over 300 points a round? how would you stop people point farm reviving? how would you stop people whining that the medals and ranks are too high? EA/Dice are trying to give the public what they want but the public is "whinge whinge whinge i dont like this i dont like that", so if i was in EAs positions id also be like "**** em, we dont know what they want"

Make the thing vulnerable to weapon fire...seriously, 2 AT hits should destroy a chopper, as should one main gun hit from armor/APC. Make the thing only repairable on the ground or at the landing pad, as well...like everything else in the game.

                >>how would you stop people point farm reviving? <<

Make it so you can't get more teamplay points than combat points? Yep, it's just that easy.

                >>how would you stop people whining that the medals and ranks are too high? <<

They pretty much did fix that, and I'm not so sure it's a good thing, unlocks are a bit too easy to get. While not dominating, they're too reliable. I'd have a 50% chance of getting the unlock every time you spawn, and picked up kits always have the default weapon.

                >>EA/Dice are trying to give the public what they want but the public is "whinge whinge whinge i dont like this i dont like that", so if i was in EAs positions id also be like "**** em, we dont know what they want"

Nope, just gotta fix obvious play balance issues, especially the hugely glaring ones with the air units.

                Take care,

                Rick

I have never had any major problems with BF2, but I feel for the people who do. Most of that post is very true.

I'll tell you how to fix all of that. Do away with the ranking system, give everyone the unlocks simply as an alternate weapon, and let someone like BFTracks use a MEANINGFUL formula to track players if they're so inclined to be interested in such a thing.
