Advice on how to free harddrive space

If you are one of the lucky who can't install the 1.03 patch due to having less than "1600mb" free on your systemdrive, you might want to try the following advice:

Before running the patch, be sure to change the location of your TEMP folder via control panel/system/advanced/system variables.

Note that you do not have to have 1600 mb free to run the patch. It seems there is an error in the error message.

Most of the space wasted on a system drive isn't because of windows system files, buit more because the Documents and Settings recide on same partition and this is where you desktop and my documents and other userprofile folder are.

In Microsofts TweakUI you can move some of these folders to other harddrive or partition, if you edit it in registry you can move even more folders.

Also if you have Hibernation activated you can disable this and same space = to RAM in your PC.
You can also temporarily disable pagefile, and restart and delete it and should yeild more space, and better yet set pagefile location to other HD than Windows resides on.

IMO these should be looked at first before starting to delete Windows files.

Other than the TEMP folders also delete the TEMP folders for IE or Firefox or whatever browser you use.

Also disabling System Restore will yield a lot more free space if install of Windows is old or used frequently for new applications etc. You do this in WINKEY+PAUSE which is System properties, also accessable via right-click on My Computer and selecting properties or via Control Panel.
