Not Enough Space To Patch BF2..? I have LOADS of space!

The patcher tells me I do not have enough space to patch BF2. It tells me I need 1.6Gb

My E drive (where Bf2 is installed) has 8Gb of space. What gives...?

    Ok,

I noticed my C drive had less than 1.6Gb free, but why should it be using the C drive for a space check when my game is sinstalled on E...?

Once I'd cleared a few files from C the patch fired up ok.

probably because the temporary folder used to install the patch, is in you USERPROFILE folder in 'Documents and Settings' and on most systems it is on same partition as Windows itself.

On my install of Windows I have altered the locations of my userprofile folders in the registry to be on a seperate partition, in case I have to do a quick fresh reinstall, then the folders are already backed up.

The patch tries to decompress the InstallShield package to your %TMP% folder BUT, no matter where that is, it also checks your system root drive, i.e. C: drive and will abort the installation if there is less than 1600MB free.

Ah okay, but most ppl don't move the TEMP folder anyway so their logic on checking the system drive is understandable, just annoying.

Couldn't it be because the InstallShield folder is in %PROGRAMFILES% folder and usually this is also on C: ??

Ppl should have more space available, a HDD doesn't operate at its best if it starts to be full, e.g. most defrag tools demand 25% free harddrive space, or defragmentation process will take too long. It has to have space to operate on.

Yep, it seems it's just hardcoded to check for space on the system drive.

On a related note, I've just got it to patch correctly - had to free up the required space on the C: drive (even though it wasn't used) just to pass the check and the patch installed fine (as it did when done manually) but it runs now whereas it was dropping back to the desktop after the splash screen.

How did I free up enough space? Ironically, I moved all the InstallShield folders out onto another drive temporarily - gave me about 650MB extra space.

So it seems that the patch program does just that little bit more than just running the patch.exe from the extracted files. What it does though to allow others to run after patching manually, I don't know...
