    9800Pro 256mb, 1gb Ram, Amd 2400+xp - STUTTERS EVEN ON LOW!

Hello, right first off here are my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Processor running at 2ghz
    1 GB DDR RAM
    9800 PRO 256MB SAPPHIRE
    SoundBlaster Audigy LS/LIVE! 24 Bit.
Windows XP Serivice Pack 2 (All latest updates)

Ok I was running my game on Medium, with 2xAA and everything was on medium except textures, I had 90% draw distance and 1280x1024 at 60hz on my Samsung LCD. The game used to run perfectly only the odd skip of lag.

Then about a month or so ago, Huge lag, now the lag is only there at the start of a round, but it continues. So I did the best thing I thought, switched it all to low, no change, I run FRAPS so i can see the ammount FPS I have and when I get the lag sometimes my FPS are 40-50! Alot of times my FPS will drop to 10-15 in a fire fight also, sometimes just while running along with other soldiers or in a jeep. I can fly fine most of the time, infact when I go up in the air I get 70-100fps on medium.

So I reinstalled all the drivers I had, Audigy, Omega 5.9's, 5.8s. 5.7s all official ATI ones too, similar results but still this lag, I got a new cooler and my CPU runs at 33 degrees C and about 40 TOPS in game, cause theres about 4 massive fans in the case to cool it. Still the stuttering problem.

I run sound in SOFTWARE MODE, with medium settings, turning EAX on and off has no effect on this stuttering.

So I bring it to the rest of the battlefield 2 world to try and help me solve this annoying problem, because I can even run the game on HIGH settings, which I dont usually, and have 30-40fps but still this stuttering.

If anyone has any ideas then please tell me or if you have more questions then ask away. thanks.

Try using Hardware for your Soundblaster seeing as it's not onboard. The only other thing I can think of is maybe you have a new app. in the background accessing the net. Although that would cause a latency issue rather than a drop in fps.

I just updated Punkbuster, that supposedly gets rid of lag, lets see...

Have you tried to check your system for spyware/adwares or errors. When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive?

I defrag once a week, last time I reformatted the PC was 2 weeks ago, Problem was there before and after reinstall of windows. I check for spyware daily, I run virus scan daily, my page file is set to 2464mb. I have 1GB of physical ram.

turn your sound to hardware or use tweakers like tunexp. BTW, how big is your page file? You said you have one gig of memory so I suggest you set the minimum and maximum page file to 2 gigs(yeah, both of them).

I've had the same problem with an ATI 9800 pro card. Stuttering got so bad that it was totally unplayable and it wasn't just in BF2, CS:S was the same. I tried reformatting, reinstalling and no joy. Managed to get a playable game again by reverting from ATI 5.9 Catalyst drivers to 5.8. After playing for a couple of hours the graphics can go strange, disappearing walls, etc. but a restart sorts that out.

In case anyone's thinking it's a spyware/virus/etc. problem, I reformatted and reinstalled Windows, installed BF2 and the ATI 5.9 drivers on a totally clean box and still had the stuttering problem. Go back to the 5.8 drivers and stuttering gone.

                  HTH.

I just set my page file to 2 gig. I cant run the game in HARDWARE sound as my Soundblaster LIVE 24 bit/Audigy LS, doesnt support it, everything sounds nice, except when voice overs come in, eg ENEMY SPOTTED turns into EENNNENNNNENNNMMYYYY SSPPPSSPPPSSPPPPOOOOOTTTTEEEEDDDDDEDDEDDED then lags the computer to hell!

Checking the readme, the soundcard isnt even supported by BF2, which is HORRIBLE, Half-Life 2 supports it, I play in 5.1 on half-life 2 and infact EVERY OTHER GAME I OWN!!! Why not BF2, thats just lazy development.

I have reinstalled windows last night, and I am going to redo everything now, reinstall fresh copy of bf2, then the 5.6 drivers and experiment.

No, that only happens when i have my sound set to HARDWARE, which I dont use, sound is perfect when set to software.

What about chipset drivers have you installed the latest ones from website of your chipset manufactuerer or maker of motherboard??

The ones on the install CD are often outdated at the day of purchase of motherboard.

If you use Omega drivers there shouldn't be an issue with PCI Latency, but if you use regular ATI Catalyst then PCI Latency is set to 248/255 which means that video card will get more cycles on the bus, and thus can have an impact on e.g. soundcard so try settings both to 64.

You can find posts on this by searching for latency.

When you install different drivers do you unistall previous and use drivercleaner to get rid of any old drivers??

I also had the stuttering using my 9800Pro/256.. When I upgraded to 1.5GB Ram
                            they went away..

Like you I tried all the above stuff.. stuttered bad..until I added another 512MB

^^^ Yes, he's right, ADD RAM, it should fix the issue completely.
