the problem is gameplay mechanics that allow noobs to thrive... if you eliminate the ability for a noob to succeed, the noob will either have to get better or move on.

Tell that to EA. It seems they keep dumbing the game down more and more. That's another reason I'm going to drop vanilla BF2 like a sack-o-crap when the mods roll in, most will offer some sort of learning curve instead of being noob-land. (the helicopters planned in Desert Conflict come to mind of one of the selling points of my arguement :p )

noobs also tend to see the glass half empty and complain rather than looking at the half full, and enjoyiing the game....look at all the complaints with the new patch for proof
