It's still BS, though. Check out what it says at the bottom of the ranks page:

The major difference between several of the higher ranks is that you get the "higher" rank if you have certain badges. Whichever rank you get, each pair only gives you one unlock.

My bar is completely empty, and I'm only 5000 points away from Master Gunnery Sergeant. I can't get it because I don't have First Sergeant. So you're not awarded one or the other, you have to go through both to be able to continue on after that.

So you need 250k to qualify for SgtMaj of MC. But by that time you're already an 2LT officer at 200k. Something is wrong here...

i dont know anything about marine ranks but in bfhq for those that are sergeant major, it says next rank - 2nd luetenant. ask AraGoth*

Yeah, you go from SgtMaj => 2 LT (enlisted to officer). But as I said above, SgtMaj MC is 250k and 2 LT is 200k. Why would you go from SgtMaj to 2 LT and then back to SgtMaj MC (Enlisted to Officer...then back to Enlisted). Obviously something is wrong with Ubar.

Then again, I'm not familiar with the role of SgtMaj of MC. Maybe he commands officers as well.

maybe there is no sgt maj of the corp. they may have taken it out because of its silly requirement (best performing serg major in that month). so you may go to 2nd lieutenant, then 1st lt, captain and so on
