I'm thinking about installing a new Harddrive for just BF2 and media. How well will this help performance, since there are no other files to defragment? What about ram drives? Should I get one of these. I curently have less than 500mb left on my drive. Will I see a major improvement?

Ram drives are a waste of money. As for performance increase you probably will see a little. Not much more than if your HD is properly defragmented. -

Re: Harddrive performance!!
well you say you want a new drive cuz your current one is nearly full, well what size is your drive now...is it an IDE ar SATA drive. i think the minimum drive size nowadays would be between 80gb and 120gb MINIMUM size... with all the music/movie downloads and not to mention jsut the shear size of games now... i wouldnt get smaller than 120gbComment

If you want to get into the "cheap high end", you proly want to go with 2G RAM, WD Raptor 74GB.
If you wanna see improvements of ram drives, Anandtech had a review on Gigabyte I-Ram drive (supports up to 4GB). They gave it a pretty good review.
From what I read, people are getting the most performance (level load time) if they have 2GB ram.Comment

Having only 500 Mb left on your drive doesnt help performance.
You have one drive? What is the size? Is it partitioned?
It is useful to have multiple physical drives. I use 3 internal drives and 1 external drive for backup purposes. Depending on size each drive should be partioned into multiple logical drives.Comment

500 MB?!? Thats very low, and what about VRAM... If you have less than 5% of your HD space free, you need another HD.Comment

Re: Harddrive performance!!
I use 2 74GB Raptors on my system as boot drive, currently I load BF2 from it. I plan to buy 2 more Raptors in order to setup my games and proggies folder on a separate array.
Can't complain about it. It's definitely fast. I also use 2GB RAM.Comment
