i have had this problem, and i found out how to fix it from EA.
First: UNINSTALL BF2 then install it again.
Second: then install all 3 patches one after the other then,
Third: go and play BF2
it should work, also I think you have to uninstall, not reinstall for this to work

AnswerSometimes a conflict in the updated files can prevent the game from properly identifying your CD-key. Usually, refreshing your CD-key will resolve the issue. Note that this will only correct the error if you used the same Windows account to install, patch, and troubleshoot the game. If you have switched Windows accounts at any point it is recommended you uninstall, reinstall, and repatch using the same Windows login.

1. Open My Computer.
2. Open the Program Files folder.
3. Open the EA Games folder.
4. Open the Battlefield 2 folder.
5. Open the Support folder.
6. Double-click on the Battlefield 2_code.exe.
7. Type in your CD-key as listed on the back of the manual and click Next.
8. The window will close (your serial number is now refreshed in the registry).

If you still experience the error, trying reinstalling the patch files to correct any improper updates. The 1.03 patch is located on the Battlefield 2 downloads page.

If the issue persists, you will need to uninstall the game completely and then reinstall and repatch to completely remove and replace corrupted files.

I had problem today (worked fine with 1.03 since it came out - today invalid CD Key) what I did to FIX it:
1. run bf2_code.exe (enter in CD key)
2. re-run 1.03 patch (didn't have to uninstall or anything just patched over 1.03 with 1.03)
Start game worked fine.

it still dnt work im so pi553d off anyone else got some ideas cause i paid $99.95 and now i can play the f**en game
