    Gameplay or point monkey :D

Was discussing with my mate about mods for BF2 and whether they will be played or not by a lot of players.

His opinion was that unless they are ranked(and most likelly in my humble are not likelly to get ranked status unless they gain EA approval, and that would most likelly be a while) and you are able to accumulate your points, people will not play them in great numbers. The awards, medals, ribbons and unlocks are a big part of the game for him.

My opinion was that people would go for the mods if they had in there opinion better gameplay than BF2, ie probably have faster, better vehicles and aircraft, higher damage and accuracy rates for weapons, more toys to play with and back to the good maps they had in DC and FH to make excellent battlegrounds. As for unlocks, who will need em if the modders get the guns of the standard kits right first time...maybe even offer a selection of 2 if the menu system allows it, to tune your kit so to speak.

    Anyway, starting to ramble.

Where do you fall? Will the mods be played?

If the mods are good, people will play them. Soon (before the mods are done anyway), everyone is going to reach the point where the next rank or next award is just too far off. At that point, nothing will stand in the way of mods except for their own crappiness.

I'd take better gameplay over rankedness, but only if it has sufficient depth and coolness.

Most people (me included) try to gain rank to unlock weapons and thusly feel that they kick more a$s. The mod that woos me away will not only have a ton of hardware for me to explore and use, but plenty of opportunities to excel.

Once the mods start rolling in, I for one will be leaving ranked servers without looking back. Battlefield 2 is just so.....plain, when it comes down to it. That and I look forward to having guns that kill people in less than 10 rounds from 10 feet away. Battlefield 2 is literally ridiculous in the way it handles things, and I have complete faith the mods will get this right. The engine is fine I say, it's just how you implement it, and I think DICE/EA/whoever-you-wanna-blame did a poor job of this, especially with what all was promised.

I also hope to see Special Forces do a big belly flop onto the concrete from a 20 story building. Once the mods are out there to compete with it, it's going to look like some pre-beta mod that just can't cut it. Lotsa hype, nothing really interesting, same old BF2 stuff. Mods will be ever changing, more open to communication with the people who play it, and provide a better gaming experience than vanilla or any expansion pack will offer unless there's a drastic change in the direction the game is going.

Rank sucks, its like money."Root of all evil" Its fun to beat thoes in a server but its useless because you gain nothing. I think the modteams can make there own server and rank system, just got to find the code and mod it a bit.

              Mods all the way!

They bring so much variety, sometimes they're almost like playing a completely different game.

BF2 is a great game but is abit small. Its almost as if they (EA/DICE) are relying on the mod community to keep this game alive, it definatley kept BF1942 alive.

If the mods could have thier own rankings and unlocks that would probably pull alot more people away from bf2. I personaly can't wait for the mods to come out. BF:A looks sweet.

*Scared Of Sounding Nooby* Er... Sorry but I dont understand how Mods work, is it that you download them and play them online from a host site (that is unranked, like an unofficial expansion) or you play on an unranked BF2 server? and what if you pick a really rare mod? Will no-one else play with you? Plz explain fully - thanks!

You play mods on bf2 unranked servers that will have the server side for the mod.

You download the client, find a game, and if the reports of the mod support for 1.03 are correct, then the mod willl be activated when you connect to the mod running server.

Pretty much what youve said, kinda like an expansion pack, except the mod teams arent suits, but dedicated teams, who work to make the game be how they want it too work, and often take community feedback on board to add and develop there games.

In BF1942 I didn't play any mods , don't think I will play lots of mods for BF2 , but I do want to play some of the funny things, like in CS , servers with very low gravity, only knife pistol, don't care if they aren't ranked.

Some of the mods in development look amazing and with the limited number of maps available on Ranked servers who wouldnt?? New guns so need for 'unlocks', new maps, gameplay...yada yada yada...I cant wait:) I imagine lots of the 42/nam vets will play there favoured mods being converted to BF2 as well.
Regarding Ranks...theyll always be there to get when you fancy it, but even the hardcore will/must get bored eventually and will try out the mods...?
