El Al for bf2 - now thats going in the right direction!

Just downloaded and had a mess around in the El AL map, that can be downloaded from the totalbf2 main page download section.

Pretty impressive, loads of aircraft, helis, apc's, tanks, mobile AA and transport.

Unfortunatelly on it myself so, couldnt get a scrap, but you can see that this would be BF in its purest form, Plenty for everybody to do, and only 3 bases to fight over, ensuring concentrated battles.

Like the way, the mapper has built the landscape in general, with steeper sides to the mountains and more channeled approaches.

Only complaints are, it could be bigger, feels a lot smaller than the BF42 original, and a nice big open desert plain, with fewer undulations for more open tank play.

All in all a good map though, and far superior to most of the vehicle specific maps in BF2.

Cant wait till the mods come out with maps like this filled with toys, so we see some good old fashioned back to the grassroots battlefield action.

Sigh, in the meanwhile back to the urban BF2 maps, as I reckon most of the vehicle maps, just dont have enough, and back to running around the too many control points....hmmph!

I downloaded it and I have to say I was really disappointed.

No disrespect to the people who created it. It is a very well coded map as far as I can see and I know how difficult it is to create good maps, but I was really disappointed by the scale of it.

El Al was a wide open map with loads of distance between the points. You couldn't possibly shoot from one point to the next. On the BF2 version it feels like you could spit from one point to another.

I almost always play as pilot and the original map was big enough to have some really good dogfights, something that is missing from almost all BF2 maps.

There must be some technical reason why BF2 maps are so much smaller than DC ones, and also why the view distance is so small. I just wish they'd do something about it.

It's probably the increase in the quality of the graphics.

            rant/

To those who are about to DL the new El Alamein map don't bother unless you plan on flying all day long. Gone are the vast desert ground armor battles, the determined ground attack of bases. All for the flyboys who constantly circle the map looking for their little target designators on the ground for the easy nooby kills.

Try and get into a tank, or an APC, or even a buggy - - and drive around; see how long it takes to asplode.
Granted the German map designer (attempted) to add a few fiery wreckage(s) that could throw-off target designators, but it still sucks.

To the "pilot ace haxX00rs" I ask this: Do you think you're cool? Can it actually be fun doing circles all day? THis esp. goes out to the [EES] punks who never set foot on terr firma once that match.

I know, I know... "Get into a plane and pwn them in the air"... Personally, I don't base my life of flying aircraft in BF2. I base my BF2 life on ground combat / occasional flying.

Draw distance = nerfed. Original El Alamein felt like a hot dry day in North Africa.

If you're like me, don't bother with El Alamein. The BF2 engine disqualifies armor battles on that map.
Edit: if you play with normal people who aren't obsessed with flying/bombing it can be fun, just hard to see very far and I have an 3000+ / 6800 GT GDDR / 1GRam

someone with a sig of an a10 pilot AND an a10 itself doesnt like planes :P

hehe, have to agree with you though el al must be crud due to bf2's plane targeting system, well saying that when i used to play desert combat on the el al map against the iraqis if they had a good couple of pilots then there was no point in even touching a tank or apc at all, same old same old then

DAMN IT I WANT 73 EASTING.

THAT map was awesome in DC, and I've come to appreciate it so much more now we don't have anything like it in BF2. It's all "Carpet bomb" this, and "giant mountains" that, and "Urban Warfare" the other....

No helos. No Planes. Just Hard Cold Steel.

I like A-10's because of their low airspeed and powerful cannons / multiple bomb capacity. Too bad it isn't in BF2.
                  Desert Conflict, anyone?

For those who thought that El Alamein map was too small for aerial battles, etc.
