Are you sure they are ranked and connected to EA's stats system?
Part of the terms to be an official ranked server is to have friendly fire on at 100% setting.

So what position does that put you in if you played in one and didn't know it was illegal until this point?

I just checked the server out and its FF on again.

Honestly, as much hated BH whoring as I do I don't cheat or stat pad.

It's easy to identify the illegal servers that enforce not taking flags and knives only etc...but this is an odd one.

I don't want to risk losing my stats for going into an unscrupulous server that breaks an unkown taboo.

How can I protect myself against this?

EA does not require it to have FF on, it's preferred to be on but is NOT a requirement for a ranked server.

People in that server complain if you end the round, but that's because they just want their points. If FF is on now, there's no problem. Unless the fact it's way less slots in the server and it's a 64 player map, but I haven't heard that's any sort of violation.

It's a shame that the clients of BF2 (you and me) have to police the "servers" that are exploiting you and me, that EA is supposed to regulate, they set down strict server rules but expect others to report wrongdoing.
