So, can I load my single version of BF2 on one harddrive to keep it unmodified for ranked servers and then load it a second time to my slave HD and mod that one for other servers? I don't want to install/uninstall all the time. Thanks!

you don't have to do that. just install mods to the subdirectory of the bf2 folder.
It is called \Battlefield 2\mods\MODNAMEHERE
Most of the newer mods have an install program with them to put them in the mods folder so they don't interfere with the main bf2 program files
