It has come to my attention, as I'm sure it has to other's as well, that in close quarters urban combat maps such as Karkand or Sharqui Peninsula, the tanks are quite vulnerable from side and flank attacks. This might seem like an obvious statement, however I haven't heard any suggested solutions. Therefore I propose a solution which will most likely fail to see the light of day.
One reason why tanks in Battlefield 2 are so ill equiped in narrow streets is that teamates of sed tank typically keep their distance, due to the touchy object interaction now in place between moving vehicles and infantry on the ground (ie. it is quite easy to be killed by a teamate driving a tank in close proximity to other teamates).
Another reason that both infantry and tank drivers prefer a safe buffer between the two respectfully is a lack of situational awareness on the behalf of the tank driver, due to restricted visual.
My proposal is for EA and Dice to tweak the interaction of objects in the 1.03 patch or any other future patches (as I think they might very well) to make it harder for moving tanks to accidentally teamkill nearby teamates. I also propose a tank squad system that allows teamates to join the tank's squad and therefore show up in a newly rendered display in the lower portion of the tank driver's screen (where the visual of the tank and it's occupants now resides). This visual display would look almost identical to what it is now except the squadmembers surrounding the tank would show up in the box as green blocks in their respectful locations around the tank, therefore allowing the tank driver to keep tabs on the location of each squadmember around the tank and hopefully preventing any unwanted reversal of the tank into an unsuspecting squadmember.
It would be invaluable to have squads protecting the sides and flanks of tanks and I believe the usefullness of the tanks in narrow streetways would increase dramatically. Tanks are only effective in an offensive role if escorted by infantry to counter AT and Eng troops.
I was also going to suggest the idea of riding on top of the tanks, as can be seen in games such as Halo, but I figured others would also have this same idea and post it. Sure enough...
If anyone has any ideas as to how Battlefield 2 can be tweaked for better tank gameplay, please don't hesitate to reply.
