very simple. startup bf2, then go to sounds - and then change the sound to software. my performance increased around 20%

You could also easily say:
'Turn down all graphics options to OFF or LOW and play at 800x600 for an AMAZING performance boost'.

yes...great audio makes a HUGE tactical difference in this game.

I can hear it when a soldier is coming up behind me...or when he's on the other side of a wall.

I can HEAR a tank rumbling towards me before I even see it.

Hell..I can pinpoint the location of a SNIPER while I'm piloting an attack chopper when I hear the crack of his rifle.

Most people are graphics wh0res...I'm a graphics AND audio wh0re (as you'll see from my posts about audio in this game )

Gaming for me is an all around experience. If a game has good graphics but crappy audio, then it isn't a good game in my mind.

Well if your running onboard sound or a low end sound card you should be running on Software anyway as they wont really have any "hardware" support anyway and will just tax your resources trying

True..hardware support is intended only for select supported audio chipsets.

humm intresting!!!!!! i always thought software mode would drain your resources as its using ur processor to do the work.and hardware would use the sound card meaning the processor has less work to do..oh well you live and you learn.....

If you have a supported chipset, then setting it to 'Hardware' will certainly take strain off the CPU and improve performance. If you try Hardware on an unsupported audio chipset, then you get quite the opposite plus lots of glitches and stutters.

Anytime you're using Software mode, you're putting extra work on the CPU.

bah, that makes the sound quality so ****.. in software mode its plain stereo and you cant hear anything, in hardware 5.1, I can clearly hear where a ****ing sniper tries to shoot

Hardware and software emulation are tricky. It really does depend on your soundcard.

If it's onboard, depending on the motherboard (mine is a A8N-E) you can set it to hardware.

Instead of running the sound from the software, it comes directly from the hardware, which in some cases can be bad and sometimes makes it sound great.

Yeah, I already have it on Software. TBH, I can do just fine with it -- I can tell when a guy is coming up behind me -- from the left or right. Or when a sniper fires at me, I can tell wheres it's coming from. And these are just a pair of headphones :P

bah.. real 5.1 with EAX and all the stuff makes it 100 times better.. I had software mode before and switched over to audigy2 + 5.1 and hell its a difference!

or when your sniping on a building you can hear people come up the ladder or try to sneak up on you
