    Vid Card Dilemma

i'm getting a new card and my choice has come down to 2 cards. a radeon 800pro that i can get for $220 w/ 12 pixel pipelines or a 800xl for $255 w/ 16 pixel pipelines. the 800pro does have higher core and internal clock speeds, i think 475mhz and 900 and the xl is something like 400 or 450 and 875 or 850. is it worth the extra $35 bucks for more pixel pipelines and a little lower clock speeds or go w/ the pro?

    my system specs
    amd 3200+
    my old 5200 fx 128mb
my mobo does not support pci-e so i need an agp card. the two above are the best i could find under $300

More pipes mean more pixels generated per cycle. However, more cycles per second also mean more pixels.

I would personally go for more pipes as its usually easier to overclock than to add more pipes (unless they are actually there but locked). As Im unfamilier with ATI cards I couldnt really comment on unlocking pipes as Im not sure if the cards you mentioned are from the same model.

X800XL is the best choice of those options and is one of the greatest "bang for the Bucks" out there.

I don't believe either is available with less than 256M.

Pipes over clocks....and the memory speed is faster on the xl....You won't regret the XL especially for $35

thanks to ne0265 who gave the link to toms hardware page on the latest agp cards, it does appear the xl is much better. the xl was tops in all categories exept agaisnt the 850's and the geforce 6800 ultra and 6800gt. however, those cards are a hundred or more dollars more (exept the 6800gt which is $60 more) than the 800xl at $255. and the xl scored much better than the pro. thx for help guys, 800xl it is. cant wait to see bf2 on the highest settings
