    anti-aliasing

Sorry to be stupid but what does this do?

Does it make sense that if I run the game with everything turned up High it sticks a bit, but with this on 4x it runs ok with everything on High??

    Thanks for any advice.

gets rid of jaggity edges if thats how you spell it lol it makes it sharper and by usein this it eats up your fps so you might want to see how it looks without it and if you dont like it then put it on 2x

Ah, that is what causes all the lag on my pc these days, when playing BF2 :)

Turning off AA on my system added an average of 15 fps which I desperately needed.

If one has a high-end video card, running at 2X AA should not cause too much of a performance hit but there will be some.

Running at 4x with everything high on my X850XT PE and sure it'll go to 6x without any problems, this card rocks

Personally I refuse to play any game with lots of jaggies. That's just me. Therefore, using AA is a must since I prefer gaming at 1024x764 32-bit. When I was tweaking BF2, like any other game, I aim for 4xAA with my 6800GT 256KB GeoForce card, and work with the other settings to achieve acceptable framerates. Yes, AA can be demanding, especially on lower-end machines, but as long as I can afford the "cost" it makes playing games more enjoyable.

Use FRAPS and see the difference between 0/2x/4x. See what other settings do. For me I mostly play using all settings on Medium, with D. Shadows and Effects on Low (going by memory).
