Memory Question for the gurus...

Motherboard: ASUS K8N-E DELUXE Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb ATX
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle 800MHz FSB Socket 754
Memory Stick 1: DANE-ELEC 512MB 184 SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
Memory Stick 2: BRAVO 512MB 184 SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

Memory stats:


Both sticks are PC3200 (400mhz) 512M. Why are they not running at 400MHz but rather 167.5MHz?

Also, does memory speed affect BF2 that much?

Yes, they definatly do, speed is everything :P im not sure why the speed i slimited, im taking a punt, bu tit could have something to do with the compatabilty of the two different RAM sticks. Ive had an issue similar before when i shoved a mate sRAM into my pc, so im guessing its the compatability.. or there is somethign wrong with one of them which is causing the other to run at the broken ones speed.

It's DDR, Cpu-Z doesnt double the timing, because for me it doesnt show 400mhz, only 220Mhz, but my bios correctly displays 440Mhz.

Hmm, interesting because i just took a "bad" stick out. It was causing the memory to run at 100mhz (with all 3 sticks in) and wouldn't boot with just that stick in.

Would I see that much improvement if I upgraded to:

CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)

1) Have you got the sticks in the correct slots on your MoBo, for running 2 sticks, Check your Mobo hand book

2) Your second stick is not registering correctly, like the first one take out the sticks and put stick "2" in the correct slot, for a single stick on your mobo and run "Memtest" on it

3) running 2 different manufacturers of ram will not help your cause at all

4) IMHO you should be running "matched Pairs" of RAM

When thinking about more RAM (memory) I can not stress enough that putting any old stick of RAM in your PC is "BAD" you should / must, get matched RAM to your motherboard (MoBo)

If more than one stick of ram is to be used then go with "MATCHED PAIRS" and sell your old RAM

To Help Find The Right Module for Your System.

You need to mach RAM to your motherboard (MoBo), because not any old sick of RAM will do. They will be running at different manufacturers settings,.... for those set in bios because they are not matched.

I suggest that you use a RAM manufacturers web site to help you choose and if you are unsure of the results Register yourself so you can post in the manufacturers forums use the forum and ask Questions there.

Don't expect an instant result from the forum, make a note of the link/url where your post is, use your "User CP" after logging in to set up an E-mail with a page link to be sent to you when replies have been added / threaded to your post.

Give only the information of the hardware you are going to put the RAM sticks in,
"DON'T" buy RAM and put it into a different MOBO.

This is Corsairs link http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/configurator_search.html where you put in your system information etc. and Corsair gives you the correct RAM for your rig.

Yes, you would see some increase in performance. The reason your original setup using 3 sticks of RAM was running at 333Mhz (PC2700) speeds is because of the fact that you had 3 DIMMS populated. Using only two sticks of RAM will allow you to run at 400Mhz (PC3200).

Well after reading thru many posts from the Corsair forums provided by GreatWhite (thanks btw), I've decided to go with DDRAM 2GB TWINX 2048-3200PT. It's not cheap but might as well have the "good stuff" and it's verified to work with my mobo.
