some boards dual channel is unaffected by adding a third stick. Some are however.
Its like hyperthreading with p4's older boards rely on 2 stick in alternatre slots to work, but modern boards dont and will run hyperthreading with just 1 stick.
This can be annoying with amd boards because they usually oinly have 3 ram slots. The solution is to get another matched pair 2 x 1gb corsair pc3200 and use the old sticks for another pc.
