Flying tuts.

Right, I recently got myself BF2. After a tough learning experience (as in, running around on foot gets you shot kind of tough experience), i've discovered that i've never tried flying.

So I go into the single player to get some helicopter experience. The problem is, I get to a certain height, tip my nose down, and plummet straight to the ground. I've tried various heights, but none seems to stop this. Should I pull up without dying, I then need to turn round.

So I press the turn key, and end up either turning around, but then going backwards, or end up upside down and plummet to my death. So I try turning using the mouse to tilt, then pitching up. Still no luck.

I'm looking for a basic flying tutorial that will teach me how to stay in the air without crashing - just how to fly but not into the floor, nothing else.

Basic requirements:
Flying forwards without crashing
Turning without crashing.

Sorry for being a complete newbie here, but I can't help it. I want to get the max enjoyment from this game, and that involves flying great contraptions of death.

And to think I was starting to feel proficient as I started gaining medals...

Once you nose-down in the helo to gain forward momentum, you will need to nose-up a little to keep from kissing dirt.

Anytime I give a flying tut my copilot bails out (guess it's better than opening the canopy, eh?) </bad joke>

Perhaps you should hover up to REALLY high, THEN practice moving around, so you have more room for error?

You do know where the throttle (W by default) is right?

Once you go up - you still have to keep the "throttle" going - or you drop.

Use a joystick - much easier IMHO.

erm, have u tried inverting your flight controls?

Why do people fly with the mouse its a lot harder than using the keyboard. I dunno about joysitcks they probably are better though...

i heard the arrow keys works better than a mouse.

i'm in the top 25 overall in helos so you better listen

1. press and hold w
2. once you've reached the desired height, press the up arrow key a little (for about 1.5 seconds) while still holding w to point the nose down and to move forward

3. at some point (about 3-5 seconds later), you will either have to press (a little) the up or down arrow key to prevent your chopper from crashing or flipping over

***remember, if you hit up, at some point you HAVE to hit down. if you hit left, at some point you HAVE to hit right. every arrow key you pressed MUST be countered by the OPPOSITE arrow key (especially when hovering).***

4. continue flying forward until you've reached the other end of the map.
5. when turning, release the w key (if you're still holding it. btw, once you're airborne, you don't really need to keep pressing the w key. the chopper will still fly by itself but will gradually lose altitude) and press and hold either the a or d key.

6. at about halfway your turn, remember to press the OPPOSITE arrow key (and probably a little up or down as well depending on whether you're close to crashing or flipping over) otherwise you'd do a barrell roll. counter your movements... ALWAYS!

for practice, just go from one end of the map to the other without crashing. after that, you can practice hovering. also, see if you're more comfortable using the arrow keys than the mouse.

also, change your sensitivity settings. mine's set at 3.5 and pitch/yaw at 10. max control without being too difficult to control...
