    Dogfighting question....

Is there some kind of trick to being able to see better when dogfighting? I always go into the HUD only view and when the guy goes off the screen, and I cant see contrails anymore.. its kinda a crap shoot where he's going. It seems like I find more and more pilots that are able to stay on my a$$ no matter what I do, but I cant do the same.

I'm a real world pilot and have been playing flight simulators since the commodore 64, if any of you are old enough to remember that beauty.

Yea I sneak up on guys in bomb mode as not to give myself away, but as soon as I switch, they pull hard and you cant get any missile hits in a 7g turn... too bad the physics arent anywhere near real or you could actually get into energy saving manuevers, etc.

Interesting.. is there somethin special I can do to set this up? I have a HOTAS throttle system with a mini mouse on it.

I'm determined to out- gear all the other pilots haha :) I have anything I could want on my joystick/hotas setup. Its nice to have the rear-view camera on the flip of a hat switch.

Ah, nevermind.. I see the button for mouselook.. I'll go give it a shot

biggest tip for all dog fighters...dont get too close to ur target... because when he pulls that turn...and ur too close u wont have enuff time to react and turn at the same moment and since the planes in this game seem to be exactly the same if u keep a distance..u can pull all the same moves that he does so u can always have a lockon

Dogfighting does not exist in this game... period.

... and I thought DC and PoE "circle wars" were bad...

Yea I've kinda come to figgure that out.. often I like to avoid air-to-air and just go on bombing runs.. you spend like 5 minutes twirling around with some other pilot before something actually happens usually. People do not know how to disengage.

The mouselook thing does not work.. you have to HOLD down a button, and my HOTAS mini-mouse dont work with it. That, and the plane wont manuever when you are using it too.. thats no good.

Thing is, if your mouse is inverted for steering, mouse look is inverted as well and I find that annoying.

I never have a problem i fly at almost stall speed anyways so if they try to bank away i dont over shoot them and can turn with them as they blow there flares and then its shot down time for them. The problem with me flying like i do is im a easy target for anyone on the ground and i fly low so i take alot of 50 cal fire

There are a couple of things you can do, in time, you will figure it out. Most of the good pilots aren't going to tell you things like that outright. Personally, every post about dogfighting (or jets in general) have missed these two basic things every time, it actually amazes me lol.

                          Re: Dogfighting question....

I havn't played so much BF2 but in 1942 i would call myself a very good pilot.

I only use the nosecam and the flyby-cam(F12), make sure you have one button for each of those views accesible without taking your hands of the flightcontrolls.
When you'r cruising around looking for other planes, use the mouselook to check if there's anything on your sides, to look below/above yourself make a 90degree-roll and look left/right.
Look behind yourself now and then using the flyby-cam.

In dogfights, never use the mouselook, only nosecam and flyby. If you loose sight of the enemy with the nosecam press your flyby-button and you will probably see him and be able to follow, when you think you have a good view press back to nosecam.

To use your POV-switch with the mouselook, download joytokey and make your top-hat control the mouse-movement.

when i read those kind of post i think you are freaking funny cause all wath you are saying is not enough.
                            the answer is simple:
1-practice at least 24hours of dog fighting if you played vietnam and bf42
2-use you f11 and especially f12 view once you losted sight of your taget.
3-mouse look disables the controls of the plane
4-follow the tracks of your ennemy when hes too close...dont try to keep him in the center of your screen.
                            5-secret
                            6-secret(the best)

EDIT: with my 12:1 kill/death ratio i know what im talking about.

no forget mouselook, its totally useless in a furball. you simply need to use your 6 and 12 o'clock views. oh and don't forget every good pilots little secret: fly-by-view. map them all to your hatswitch and get used to using different combinations like our favorite 12 o'clock / fly-by. also, if you can afford the fps-hit turn effects setting on high and you might try to increase your fov by tweaking your videodefaults.com file.
