How do you make a tank a 3-person crew instead of a 2-person crew?

Was thinking of making a 3-person crew tank instead of the default 2-person crew we have now.

The driver should probably have a limited viewing arc since he he driving using digital/physical pericopes.

Was thinking the driver would use the "portal-view" that an APC passenger has:

The main gunner's view wouldn't change.

    Any ideas?

That would be very cool if you could incorporate that. Something I would like to see is the ability to turn out or in, thus giving a wider viewing arc, like you said. Whether this is possble, is another matter.

Since tanks in real life have a commander who have 360 degree views prividing the tank with more situational awarenes, then you should kind of incoorporate that into the drivers position. Because if its just a driver with a straight view and a gunner with a limited view, it would be vary hard to do anything due to the lack of situational awareness and you would be extremly vulnerable.

In that case, make it so the driver/commander spot also can "spot" targets for the gunner just by left-clicking, which would show the enemy on the enemy on the minimap, and if possible code it so where the /drivercommander clicks theres also something that shows up on the 3D map for the gunner so he can easily know which way to turn and such for the current designated target. If you just have 2 positions where one drives and one shoots, it would simply be horrible. You need communication and teamwork in multiple seated tanks which requires good features added to the tank.

-Gunners have a "zoom" to engage targets from longer distances. You can replace "pop smoke" with zoom and give pop smoke to the commander/driver as right mouse since he knows more whats gonig on.

-Commander/Driver position has a full 360 degree view for easy spotting for better situational awareness for the tank.

-As I said above, when the commander/driver "spots" (left-mouse) it should show up on the minimap just like the current spotting feature, as well as the 3D map for the gunner only if ya can code it.

Hope you consider my ideas. :)

Great ideas, for an open source engine.

Refractor engine? Don't count on it.

Hmmmmm, those ideas are very nice, Solodude23. You should be working/participating in some kind of mod w/ ideas like those.

You'd be surprised at what can be done. Some of Solo's ideas are from a BF1942 realism mod (Desert Combat Realism).

I thought this is how BF2 would handle tanks, having one person being able to drive and shoot is a bit silly on something that powerfull :/

Mabbe give a front mounted MG to the driver or something like the old sherman lol :P

Actually as Fishwork said, things similiar to these were already done similarlly in BF1942. I wouldn't doubt some of the things if ya have good enough coders. :) The only thing that is not surley possible is the commanders target showing up on the 3D map, which I would not doubt anyway. All the rest is fairley easy.

I like solodude23's idea but, will alittle added.
First the machine gun on top of the tank is great nothing needs to be changed on that what so ever.
Then it comes to the gunner and the driver, well I think the driver having the ability to pop smoke is need no matter what. The idea of worrying about the gunner thinking about it puts to much on most players minds. Going to the vision for the driver you should make you see through para-scopes, adding to that mabey have more than one like modern tanks. Adding more have then depending on damage to the tank mabey even some how they falling off or apart. Mabey even more depending if the rpg that hits the tank hits the para-scope it breaks or falls off. Thats all I think about the driver.
Then to the gunner the vision on the gunner in the tanks now would work perfectly. Not having to add anything, only taking away the ability to pop smoke. If wanting to adding a scope to it would be cool, or mabey nightvision depending on if you ever add night maps (wink..wink).

The 360 view can be done, but replacing smoke with zoom? I don't believe so, and the targetting function? I wouldn't bet on it.

As for smoke with zoom: You're gonna be surprised

Targeting function: considering how DCR did it, I dont think it would be too hard to implement. When you were the commander/driver in DCR the commander called out "contact" and the main gunner had and indicator on his screen of where the commander was pointing. Now it didnt identify *what* type of unit the commander saw (like a tank, jeep, infantry, etc) but we still have radio commands for that in BF2. The the comander has to do is put his corsshair over the target, hold the "Q" key and left click. Its not any different than what we do in game already to identify targets. I actually hope the commander can get a zoom function as well. It can be odd when you're the one who's supposed to be spotting targets for the gunner, but you dont have your own zoom as well.

Solo maybe next time you should just go to the site and copy and paste from the DC:R change log/information. It would save you time

You will see . I would think the targeting would not be hard, and adding a zoom instead of smoke....well....its possible.
