is there a way to change mec skins and the way guns look and change the sounds also. And still play online with others.
Just like in counter strike source.

no chance.
again: the program checks every file in the directory needed for gameplay settings.
did ya ever notice that "verifying client data" at the end of map loading?
it generates the checksums of all your bf2 files and compares them with the ones on the server.
this means: you cannot even open a file (eg. mods/bf2/init.con), press the spacebar, backspace and save this file without being kicked from every server after map loading.
modders hell but it may help to get rid of all those cheaters, thats a good argument.

actually....some servers allow unmodified content, its mostly the private servers, the people with the kick ass computers who can run the game on super high....:/
(theres only like 4 servers...)
but just not the official servers

Thats the other side of this feature.
Sure, some people would make cool skins and sounds but there are cheaters and they are abusing this with neon skins and stuff like that. Fn cheaters, they made this game a modder's hell

Even worse I remember quake2 with green/red and blue/yellow contrast skins and High contrast oversized rockets to help you dodge incoming Rockets ... even saw modded weapon models so you could see if people were aiming at you, and modded rocket models with massive long spikes on them so if someone fired off from range you could easily dodge it.

Was why I helped with a 'pak checker' for savage league that stopped that kinda crap.

I just hope it never rears it's ugly head every again.

I have a mod for CSS where it changes the game to germans agenst terrorists, and there are new sounds and everything, yet i can still play online with people without the mod, so i think it could be possible.

Now with the verifying client data you obviously can not keep the single player mods that allow you to play with more then just 16 bots, as well as the change that enables all upgradable weapons, but will you still be dinged when you move/delete the EA and the DICE opening animations on the startup? They take too long and I perfer them out of my config, will I still be kicked from the server if I have those out?
