need help hosting game online behind a router

k, so my friend and i tried to have a practice round today, but our team server was down.
so i tried to host a game and have him join, but every time i made a game, the game's IP adress was my networks IP number, you know 192.169.1.101 and the like, he tied it too and the same thing happened.

is there no way to host a game online from my computer if i'm behind a router?

set the router to forward the ports to the server

DL the dedicated server files from EA....

the readme file which tells you which ports to open...
