So you can just hit prone at anytime while in the air or do you have to do just before impact?

I havent tried that, but on Strike at Karkand at the main MEC base, if you jump off the wall and land on the ground w/out parachute you get hurt, if you jump onto the tank from above, hit E to enter tank right before you hit it, no hurt
